The Easton Gas coninanv have ob tained supplements to their charter au thorizing them to extend their pipes to Phillipsburg and South Easton. These towns we suppose, therefore, will soon be lighted with gas. Hon. James Pollock. This gentleman having been nominated ns a candidate for Governor by the Whig estate convention, we regret to see that his Congressional course has already been misrepresented .by his political opponents It is asserted that he voted against men. and supplies for the Mexican War. This is not so; the bill appropriating ten mil lions, and authorizing President Polk to accept 50,000 volunteers, received the vote of Mr. Pollock it passed 174 to 14 and Mr. Strohm was the only Pennsylva nia in the negative. Let us keep history correct for the honor of our State, if not for the sake of truth. Pltiladetyhia Sim. At least one hundred and fifty speeches upon Nebraska, arc al ready prepared for delivery in the house. Here there is a stock of eloqnence for lour months at least, Then the appro priation bills will consume a month or two to say nothing of all other measures nnd private bills. Verily this will be a notable session, unless matters take a new turn as remarkable for its length, as the little business which will be transacted. Important Trial for Conspiracy fatal Steam Boiler Explosion. Pittsburg, Monday, April 17, 1S54. The Small Note case against Ilazen, Davis, Morris and Lawson, a conspiracy suit for endeavoring to extort 110,000 from the Pennsylvania Railroad Compa ny, was concluded to day. William A. Stokes for the prosecution made an elo quent speech to the jury. Judge Mc Clure charged the jury strongly for the prosecution, and after an absence of three hours the jury returned a verdict of guilty Mr. Stokes moved for sentence forthwith, when it was found that none of the de fendants were present. Their bail was forfeited, and warrants issued for their arrest. Hazen and Davis were taken and committed to jail, but Morris and Lawson have not yet been found. The boiler of a steamboat on Jone's Perry exploded this morning as the boat was leaving the shore. The engineer Ja cob Hadley, was instantly killed, and four others were injured. JXS A great horse race came off at New Orleans on the 5th inst. the stakes being $10,000 aside, with other heavy a niounts pending on the result. Four hor ses were entered, viz. Lexington, for Ken tucky; Lecompte, for Mississippi; High lander, for Alabama; and Arrow, for Lou isiana. The first heat was won by Lex ington, Arrow being distanced. The sec ond heat and the race was won by Lex ington, Lecompte coming in second and Highlander third. The track was very heavy. The Kentuckians present were much elated, of course, at the success of their favorite. Artesian Weils. The Councils of Frederick, Md., have just completed a successful experiment, commenced some time since, for the pur pose of supplying that city with water by , means ot the Artesian iountain. The Examiner, referring to the sub ject, says that the present depth of the shaft is over five hundred feet, and then to be rimmed out to the diameter of five and afhalf inches, the top of the supply of water is said to be nearly fort' feet high er than the receiving reservoir of the pre seut waterworks, and the water is of the delicious quality. Up to the present time the JLxaminer says the cost of the entire work, including an engine, is less than four thousand dollars. The spirit of incendiarism appears to be destroying property by wholesale in Philadelphia. Eight or ten fires occured there between sunset on Saturday night and Monday morning, most of which were ignited by the hands of incendiaries. One man was killed and two or three injured by being run over by engines; twenty six horses were burned to death, and va rious dwellings, stores, stables and lumber yards were consumed. During the period alluded to false alarms were of frequent occurrence, and fire companies were con tinually racing through the streets, and comiug into collision. In short, rowdyism was perfectly rampant, and law and or der was completely nonplussed. g" Something of a commotion among the "solid men" of Boston, by the publi cation of the fact that Hon. Edward Ev erett was the author of the celebrated Hulsc mann letter, which has been consid ered as adding so much to Mr. Webster's fame. It seems that Mr. W. called upon Mr, Everett to write the letter, which he did; and now, since it has been so univer sally be praised, Mr. Everett has applied to Fletcher Webster for the original draft in his own hand writing, and obtained it. An extensive Counterfeiting Establish ment was broken up in New-York, on Sunday, in Thirty-fifth street, between second and third Avenue. A large quan tity of spurious 81 and 85 gold pieces was found, so perfectly made that it required good judges to detect them, and, on fur ther search, the officers discovered costly dies, galvanic batteries, and other imple ments. Five persons were also taken in to custody Edward T. Morton, John Brown, Charles Watson, alias John Clark, Almira Wap-on. Amanda Hewct- 'lii(a;e!phin. I?2;irkcf. . Monday, April 17.
