WEDNESDAY, Feb. 16, 1610.
The gold market opened strand at 120,
bat grectually deolined. and closed at
119%. There is nothing at present to
Influence an upward movement, al
though the market is largely oversold:
Large return shipments of our bonds
from Europe would, perhaps, Influence
the gold market quicker and give rim,
to rardd and wider fluctuations than any
rumors concerning the Cuban question,
or the issue of forty or fifty millions of
Government bonds opened strong at
an advance of yesterday's clotting quo
tations, but: on lower. gold again de
clined and aimed weak. Some large
lots have been received from Europe
against sales at high quotations, and the
nreeent quotations will still leave a mar
gin for return ahipments. The &diner'
is nasally duo to the small purchases of
bonds by the Government during the
present month, but for the month of
March a sharp rally is expected, since
the currency balance in the Treasury
has been so augmented as to enable the
Secretary of the Treasury to buy bonds
in large amounts for next month.
Stocks are unsettled. There was a de•
cline of over one per cent in Reading

nearly recovered. New York Central
'Wok and scrip advanced about ono per

press stocks' were stronger.
Money continues easy on call and
paper for four months, and, perhaps,
not strictly prime is more readily taken
at from 13 to-lb per cent, and prime
abort endorsed notes will pass at from
9to 10 per cent.' Ire is also more
money offered at th banking houses
for Investment, tut t high rates of in
terest prevailing here since hat Decem
ber bas brought out a chse of Mull
capitalists grasping for the last cent that
can be squeezed out of an hard pressed
debtor. The expected ease of the money
market will soon drive out this class
spin. and, needy borrowers can Vdt sup.

The new steamer City of - Evantivllle,

—The United States boarding officer
at Mae l'Outre, mouth of the Weals.
alppi, in a letter to tho Collector at New
Orleans, writes that to settle a disputed.,
question, lie reports a depth of thirteen
feet of water on the bar through that
peas. The Government dredge boat Es-
Bayous is dredging up from the outside
of the bar, and leaving sixteen or seven
teen feet of water behind her, but the 1
length of time required to work through
the cruet of the bar can not be conject
ured. He predicts that in a few weeks
the bar will be open to vessels of large
draught.
. —The ahippers of plows in Loulaville,
No the steamboat freight clerks claim,
are getting remarkably cute in shipping
those articles. According to the tariff I
of rates the boats charge thirty cents for
each plow to New Orleans. • The ahlp.
pers. in order to get lees raters, take their
plows to pieces, and ship by the hand
red pound. weight, returning their
plows at thirty-three pounds each. By
this dodge they only pay sixteen and'
two-thirds cents for each implement, in- ,
stead of thirty cents, where it is shipped !
by the piece.
—Capt. Martin, it appears lived four
teen hours after the explosion, and was

had drowsed his induida, he, asked
the Captain how he felt, to which!,
he replied, "as if all his Insidea were

doctor that he would not Live long, to
which he responded that .he "supposed
not." He was sitting on the shears at
the time of the explosion, and his Met
expression after recovering Ma senses,
was to Inquire what wee tho matter.
