    PETROLEUM MARKET.
UFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
SATURDAY,.. August 21, 1669.
The oil market has been very dull and
-stagnant during the entire week, and
with a co:imperatively ligh volume of
business in the aggregate, prices, com
pared with the earlier part of the week,
have declined , materially.' New York it
seems has turned bearish again, and- as
a consequence has been selling - freely,
in view of breaking the market, and
thus far their effirts have been attended
with considerable success; while on the
\other hand, Pittsburgh has been buying,
on prices have got, down so low that re
finers can buy all the oil they want to
cover their contracts at better figures
than they can mace it. Compared with
last week, refined has declined meter'.
"ally, and crude also is weak and lower,.
though it is still ralatlyely higher than re
fined.

The river remains stationary with
twenty-one inches in the channel.
Weather continues hot; mercury at 5 P.

—The Great Republic'= was detained
forty-five }fours at Cairo, making repairs
to her machinery. •
,:—Capt. John Shunk has assumed cow
mend of of the Glasgow and Capt. Robin
son has taken charge of the office. -
r—The Camelia. Pittsburgh to St. Louis
arrived at Cincinnati on Thursday. 4she
was a long time out from this port.
—The Cincinnati Gazette of Friday
Bays: Capt. James M. Maratta, of the
Emma No. 3, telegraphed from Paducah,
yesterday, to have a barge sent, to him
to lighten the Emma over the bar com
ing up. There was no barge here to .be
obtained.
—Capt. Jno. Woodburn has contracted
with• Dumont for the machinery for the
third packet he is building for the M6lll
- and Arkansas River Co. The ma
chinery consists of three double-Rued
boilers, 28 • inches in diameter,'and 20
feet, long. • The cylinders wil. be 15
inches in diameter, with 5 feet length of
stroke. •
—The Jefferson Times, of recent date
says: Capt. A. P. DuMay has built; a
steamboat for low water Jefferson and
Shreveport trade, which only draws
fifteen inches; and will carry two hiin

, o —Says the' Cincinnati Commeicial:
Joseph Rutledge, not. Copper Joe, is one
of the pilots of the towboat Jim Watson,
now en•route here from Tennessee River
with a tow of iron. Mr. Rutlege was
on the Great Republic on her big trip
from New Orleans to Cincinnati. He
was also on the Jim Watson when she
took the largest tow that ever went to
Frankfort, Ky.
—Pat Kinney, a deck band on the Lo
rena, who fell overboard from that boat
near Shawneetown, and was reported
drowned, rejoined the boat at Louis
ville. He fell between the boat and
barge, and was struck by the wheel of
the Lorena and badly bruised about the
back, but managed to swim ashore, and
got on'bOard the Armada and came up
to Evansville, and from thence by rail.
—A Si. Louis telegram under date of
Thuradgiy says: Capt. Joo Kinney has
bought the steamer War Eagle for a
moderate sum. He will paint, repair
and put her in the Miami trade in a few
days. T e Continental ran hard agrotind
at Hat liland on her way out, and the
Rubicon, failed to move her after an
hour's pulling. At last accounts a tow ,
boat and barge at Grand Island., had
been sent for to lighten her. St. Paul
papers mention an unusually highatage
of water for the season, five feet laige to
Head Lake, and a full river below.
