- A• STABLE containing horse, cow and
- other live stock, with a sleigh, wagon,
etc., was consumed by fire, on Tuesday
morning, in Altoona, and several neigh
boring buildings were more or less dam
aged. This is very little fire for one
r week in Altoona, but, as usual, it was in
" cimdiarlem.

John Rhoads, aged sixteen months,walk
ed up to a table on which a cup of hot
coffee had been poured out, and pulled it
over on herself, severelysealding her arm
and breast. She suffered severely, for
three days, when death came to her re

Ten family of Nicholas Rowe, of Gib
son township, Susquehanna county,-wa s

noticed but poison was not thought of.
A rEw days since Mrs. Alfred Beans,
of Northampton, left Siet - me to go in
the milk vault, and on returning found a
huge black snake, nearly five feet in
11 length, •in the cradle with the babe, a few
months old. Mrs. Beans immediately
grasped the child by its head and drew it
from the cradle while the snake was lying
across it breast. Mr. Beans was not at
home at the time, but a neighbor was sum
moned and the reptile killed. It ,Is sup
- posed the snake came from a large heap
of stones that, lay near by, which 'bad
new house hauled there preparatory to building

Tag dwelling of Mr. . Martin Brinton,
in Cumberland county, about three miles
from Bridgeport, was destroyed by fire
early yesteitlay morning. About three
o'clock Mr. Brinton was awakened by the
howling of hip dog, in the kitchen, and
opening s door he discdVered that the
greater portion of the house was envel
oped in flames. He in flames, Re im
mediately aroused his wife and children,
and succeeded in removing them from the
burning building just in time to save
. them. Even their wearing apparel, ex:
cept that on their persons, had to be left
behind to be consumed, with all the other
contents of the dwelling. Mr. Brinton
was compelled to borrow various articles
of clothing to enable him to come to the

It was laid out only two or three years
ago and now it is to have water and gas
Tim Pomeroy Telegraph says there
were 28 deaths in that city in one week—
all the subjects being children. Nearly
all the deaths were caused by measles.
Orr Monday last a large portion of the
Bucyrus machine works was destroyed
by. fire. The damage is estimated at
$lO,OOO, while the insurance was $5,000.
Owing to the exertions of neighbors the
best portion of the worse and a large
amount of partially built machines were
saved.
THE Mansfield Herald says: Last Mon
day a man by the name of Jos. Lawrence,
working at Hammond's saw mill, near
Woddberry, Wood county, was rolling
logs around the mill with a team of hor
ses, when by some accident a'log rolled
over him, smashing his head and killing
him instantly.
r LAST Wednesday pril 21st,
a little son of Mr. Thomasßell, a laborer
at the Brewster Coal Mines, while riding
between two cars coming out of the
mine, fell doWn upon the track and got
doubled and jammed together so, by the
cars passing over him, that he died in
four hours after receiving his injuries. --

Baltimore and Ohio Railroad at Bellaire,

burglars first broke into the tool house of

stone picks, and with these they broke
open the safe. No, trace of the burgh
has been discovered.

A. & G. W. R. R., was thrown from the
track- on the night of the2,ld, near Broad
way, Ohio,, caused by obstructions being
put on the track. The Division *twin
tendent, says the Company will- t - L a
reward of 14;000 to any one who will
ferret out the perpetrators this infa
mous deed. The train was f under full
headway and before it could be stopped,
the engine, tender and baggage car were
off the track, but luckily no one- was

—The Tuscarawas Chron 'le says:—
We learn that on Sunday last a Mr.
Chaney and another man discovered a
she wolf in the woods on the Clark farm,
three miles from Cadiz on the Cambridge
road. The wolf ran, the men gave
chase, but she distaiiced them, and
was lost sight of. On returning to the
place from whence ,she started, her, den
was discovered, in which four cubs were
found and captured. A gun was pro
cured, and after lying in wait for an hour
the wolf returned and was shot and killed.
She was a gray wolf and probably the
"last of the MohiCans."
