my head and beat me; she would take me

man held me; she would scratch my per

Mrs. Malsch has whippettne on the bare
skin with a strap; Mrs. Milled' once drag
ged me on the floor by the hair; she
would tie me and keep me laying on the
floor for half a day at a time; sometimes
I got no breakfast when . I went.to work;
slut would send mea piece ofbread to the
shop; they have six of thelrown children,
butt did nearly all of the Work; the rope
with which they hiing me was fastened
to the cupboard door; I was hung up till
I was black in the face; a Hate girl named
. Kidderich saw this; Mrs. Malach once
threw hot coffee down my• breast; she
stretched my month with her fingers,
• 'once, to my ears; my nose was flattened
as it is by her pounding me with her fist;
my nice was burned by her,. and my
hands and arms cut with a knife.

Mrs. Regina Drantfel 'Er, whoibsided
very near Midsch, on Gist street, In the
Fourteenth ward, was .the next witness
sidled. - - She was not - subricenaed,• but
learning of the case through the papers
she came voluntarily. She 'testified as

Burgess about her; Mabalt reported he
had found her; the girl would go with
the brickets for coal at night; they never

1 Mrs. Gross, also a neighbor in Bir
minghani, testified that she saw the girl
in the yard bleeding at theneck. Mena
said Mrs. M. scratched her. Witness
heard the girl coming and going for coal
at all hours of the night, . She worked
all day and then had to go -out for coal;
she had bad shoes and clothing.
Mrs. Eliza Gross testified' that she no
ticed the difference of the treatment of
the children as , soon.as the -family catue
there; Mena was half clothed; the bad
treatment of the girl was talked ofaniong
the neighbors, but they feared Mrs.
Malsch, who was very violent; she threat
ened to knock witness' brains out once.
RESCUED FROpI SUICIDE. •
Thomas DleCoy, sworn; Am an engi
neer and live on Bingham street,. Birm
ingham; on the 19th of March last, in the
afternoon, on going to the mill saw the
girl on a sand beat at the river; her
mbventnits made me mviciovs that all
was not right; went to her and brought her
to the engine room; she was dirty and
cold; had her warm herself and gave her
water to wash; then questioned her. and
she told me of her bad treatmentv she
said she interided to drown herself; took
her home with me and she ban - been
there ever since; my wife has exathined
the condition of the girl' and says it is
horrible: her legs are , blue and ribbed;
Mrs. Malsch said •she had. been treated
.like a nigger; her arms and body are

TICE DEFENDANTS.
e defendants, as indicated by the
name, are firerman. Malsoh is probably
liss
over fifty years of age, and his wife some
years Young er. _ They are strong, hearty
p9rsona, and apparently very ignorant.
Mrs. Malsch has a bad look about her,
while her husband is simply brutish in
appearance. Other; itnessa were pres•
ent to testify In corroboration of that' al
ready detailed,' and many more were
promised if needed. Mayor Brash, how
enough-idered that he had mere than
to warrant him in holding the de
fendants to answer the charge.
The only testimony Mast% wanted to
offer was that, as he claimed, the girl
had run away became she hadbeen steal
ing. This the Mayor declined to hear.•
and the defendants were held for trial.
The bail in the case of was fixed -at 1
two thousand
