The general markets have been exceed
ingly quiet and dull thus far this week,.
and the volume of business in the aggre
gate light. We are in hopes, however,
that with a speedy resumption of navi
gation, of which there is every appear.,
ance at this writing, there will be a de
cided improvement in all branches' of
trade, and that the dullness and ''-depres-
sfon which have oolong prevailed, will be
made to give place to that adtiVity and
bonyinniY which should pervade business
circles at this seamen, of the year. The
markets, in a general, way are deiold
of anything that is really new or impor
tant, and the most noticable feature we
lhave' : to report is that almost everything
is *reclining in value, gradially but
steadily.

SEEDS—Cloverseed is steady at $lO,OO

changed at $3,50, and Flaxseed is firmer

SALT—Is quiet but steady, and is still
quoted at $2 by the car load.

ST. Louis, March 10.—Tobacco; there
is a better feeling and more doing; the •
price still remains unchanged. Cotton
nothing was made public: middlings are
nominal at 28c. Hemp: prime choice
new undressed was sold at 51,46@i,60.
Flour is dull-and unchanged; sales were
reported at 15®5,75 for superfine; ex
tra, $6,15®6,35; double extra. $6,75@7;
treble extra, 58@8; to fancy, $10®10,50.
Wheat : choice and fancy grades, are
steady at full prices; medium and low
grades are very fiat; strictly prime to
fancy white sell at $1,73®1,95: spring is

RIVER NEWS.
Both rivers; under the influence of the
rain on Tuesday 'night and yesterday,
were rising last evening with five feet in
the channel by the 'Monongahela marks.
The weather continues warm and sultry
with frequent showers of rain. Mercury
at 4 ?. m. yesterday 60.
There had been no arrivals up to last
evening, but there are several boats due,
among others the . Glendale and New
York.
The Bayard, Capt. Geo. D. Moore, is
the regular packet for Parkersburg to
day, leaving promptly at noon. Here
after the Bayard, will leave here on
Monday's and ThUrsday's.
Capt. John Evans. well-known in tow
boat circles, died at Rochester on Wed
nesday night or yesterday, we did• not
learn which. Tha Coal Hill we under
stand was the last boat he had command
of.
The Maggie Hays, Capt. B. C. Martin,
will leave for St \ Louis to-day, without
fail. ,
The Bellevernon, Capt. J. J. Darragh,
Jr., takeS her departure for New Or.
leans to-day, and passengers and Ship
