If we invest, in the eadinary man ner, one dollar, we of course ervect at feast one hundred and six cents in return, but f we have a chance ot readying by some ex i traordinary method of investment, a dollar and a quarter al the end of the year, we are often willing to pay, for the `privilege of in curring that chance, such a l sum as may de prive us of any profit whatever. This re mark is prompted by a consideration of the different methods of life insurance now of fered to the public. On one side we have the mutual companies, which,- for positive high premiums, paid during a man's life, will guarantee a certain sum to his heirs at', his death; aad also will possibly pay into his hands certain premiums, , which may be de clared by' the companies; the time of pay ment and the amount of said ro premi ums to be determined by the pfits which may accrue. On the other hand we have the method proposed by the National Life Insurance Company of the United States of America: In this Com pany everything it promises is as fixed and certain as that which it asks. In the.,first place the premium paid is smaller than in the mutual companies.. There is an advan tage to start with. Secondly. There is no po'sibility of the insured person being de ceived or deceiving himself by Incorrect, calculations. SamuCh premiuni secures so much money 'at death. Thirdly. The poll cies cannot be forfeited, for what one has paid, he receives a policy for a priiportionate amount. .Fourthly. Thepolicy one receives is-a certain possession of the heirs at the death of the insured. It cannot be attached by creditors. These and, other promises are secured by a paid-up capial of one million dollars, thus making it possiblefor this Com pany to meet all liabilities, no matter what losses or disappointments may occur. When we add to these various advantages the fact that men of the highest finaneill positions in the country ere at the head of the Com puny, thereis no possible reason for doubt ing the absolute security it guarantees to all its policy-holdem ' • The Farming Prospects in the South. Yaluable, sugar plantations in Louisiana, which were sold at nominal prices two years ago, are rapidly going up in the market. The New Orleans Crescent says that planta tions which were bought for $lO,OOO two years ago the owners now could get $30,000 for them, One which was bought about two Months ago Tor $130,000 the owners refused $170,000 for. Of course this is not to be wondered at when the net proceeds of plan tations can be bought for $30,000 or $-10,000 whilean outlay of $15,000 or PON. will make a era!? of $60,000 or $30,000 per an num: Capitalists, everybody knows, are cautious, but when the results are so patent as this year, it is no wonder r that Western men are going along the river examining and selecting plantations for permanent set tlement. A. letter from Georgia to the New York -Times says that from all appearances, it the coming "year is even mo.derately propi tious; more cotton will be made in Georgia than has been made. since 1860. EVen la.' dies are talking of baying •their cotton patches, and are discussing the comparative merits of various tertiliz as; sabsoil 'plows etc., with as much - Interest as the oldest plat:ltem. _There are signs of material pros perity on all sides,4tuid among the negroes well as the whites. The .4.lmond Trade. A recent visitor to Malaga describes the process by which the chiged, cracked, or otherwise damaged alrmind kernels are pre pared for market in the extenstire fruit es tablishmenta of that city. The defective kernels are scrupulously, sorted out and con veyed to a large, low table, around which half a dozenwomen are seated on the ground. Before each woman is a pile of the damaged almonds, a little jar of liquid gum and a tiny mound of brown dust, gathered from the inside of the almond shells; by her side a basket and in her right hand a camel's hair brush.. Her Her business is to pick' up almonds frdm bier pile (which is constantly being fed by an attendant), paint over the damaged place with gum and dip it in the mound of brown-dust. She then brushes off the su perfluous grains of -powder, and drops the apparently perfect almond into her basket, the latter being'emptied at intervals into a heap of shelled, fruit that occupies a whole corner of theYoom.: In some establishments simpler and leas adhesive liquid of gurals used in this department of the. trade ; the gun being a recent l"at SPECIAL' NOTICES. fairP iLW r isB c.: .
