RIVER NEWS.
The river continues to rise slowly at this
point with scant seven feet in the channel
by the Monongahela marks last evening.
The weather yesterday was undoubtedly
the.worst of the season. A steady mixture
of snow and rain fell during the entire day,
whileunder foot there was a mixture-of
snow, water and mud, rendering it exceed
ingly disagreeableibr pedestrians to navi
gate, and ont-door business — was almost
completely suspended.
We have no arrivals or departures aside
from the regular packets. The New York,
from Cincinnati, and Armenia, from St.
Louis, are among the first boats due.
The. Bayard, in command of Capt. Geo.
D. Moore, leaves for Cincinnati to-day.
She will continue in the Pittsburgh and
Cincinnati packet trade until the McCul;
lough is able to resume business again.
The Savanna arrived from St. Paul last
evening. This is her first appearance here
Since last spring; she usually comes here
to winter. ,
The Coal City was getting a tow ready
last evening, and will • doubtless take her
departure to-day.
The Glasgow, Capt. Andy Robinson Jr.,
will be the drat boat out or St. Louis.
The Rate Putnam. enroute from Pitts
burgh to St. Louis, was. at Louisvillion
The Mary Davage, Capt. Jaa. Sheddeo, is
announced for New Orleans forthwith.
Gen. Chas. Barnes lecher Eigent.
The Camelia, Capt. Thos. Poe, clerk
Geo. Splane, will be the first out for Nash
ville.
The R. C. Grey, according to our latest
advises, was going through to 'Memphis..
We
We did think that she would reship at
Cincinnati.
—The Silver Cloud No. 2, arrived at St.
Louis on last Friday.
—The Louisville Courser, of Saturday
says: The Sallie was unable to come over
the falls Thursday evening and dropped
back to Portland and transferred her
freight to the Pink Varble and came np
yesterday without difficulty. The Varble
brought her freight through the canal.
The Sallie n,
, will leave for Pittsburgh as soon
as she takes her freight aboard.
—The Muscatine Journal says: Superin
„tendent Raney passed down on the Addle
Johnston yesterday . for St. Louis. He
meets "old min" Davidson Captain P. S.
Davidson, the .White Coll ar superintend
ent, W. E. Wellington, assistant superin.
tendent and other general officers of the
line at a conference to be held in that city .
next Wednesday. The Captain will "win
ter" in Pittsburgh. ,
—The St. Louis .Republican of Saturday
says: The question of.the "Great Repub
lic" was finally decided, yesterday, by the
Court ordering another' sale on the 15th,
thus deciding adversely to the claims of
the parties who thought they had bought
her on last Friday. It is now asserted that
the difficulties under which the boat has
been laboring will be, settled amicably, and
no sale be pecessary. - ,

waited on Messrs, Rose 41r, Detin, the well
iknown machine and engine builders of our
city, and laid before them the project of
building iron barges for his line. Messrs.

who has had considerable experience in
iron ship building in England and the
Canadas, gives it as his opinion that iron
blows can be built here within one-third
or one-fourth the coat of wooden. bargee.
Should this prove true, the Commodore
will bave two iron barges put on the stooks

—The following affidavit of Mr. Joseph
P.'Maigh and Captain W. B. Donaldson,
was tread In the. United States District
Ceirt, at St. Lotile, otiPrlday last, in regard
to the Great. Republic: • It stated that• they
were present at• the tiara , appointed for the
sale, and that it was then apparent from
the appearanee and conduct of the parties
present that therewould not, ,bp any fair
competition in , the bidding for the boat,
end that it . would,,lf put ,up, be saorlded:
that the Deputy 'United States Marshal,
under the circumstances, stated telhose
present, that unlesi - a sum, was' bid that
woald justify him in starting the boat, he
would not put it lip; that the sum of tf5,00 0
was offered but that i the , Marshall refused
to receive it as bitiL7 • The Deputy Mar.
shal also stated thstbs•roula not, put up
the boat except on an advance of 550,000.
The boat is the largest and most costly on
the Western rivers, and cost, less than two
years ago, over 5270,000. A few- of the
large items -of- this are: hull, 550,700; en
gines and blacksmith work, 578,291 11;
cabin, 529,116; painting, $8,970; bedding
and upholstery, 512,390 88; silver ware.
53 ; 812 50. The affiant further states that,
the boat can not now be built for $200,000,
that the"outlit of said boat . ispomplete and
in 'good order, and that with the exception
of her needing to be placed on the - docks
for caulking and some slight repairs, Is in
good order, she having no broken timbers
whatever. They believe that if put up for
sale, she will bring - a great deal more than
enough to pay all her lien debts, and that
they now have a written offer of a dilly re.
,sponsible party to start the boat in case it
is put up for sale, at the sum of 535,000.
