ONDS
OFFICE OF THE PITTSBITIMEI GAZETTE,
SA.TIIIMLY. -December 5, 1868. $
Conflicting rumors of riots in Paris at
which-the Emperor Napoleon bad been
been killed, advanced the premium on gold
to 135%, when these rumors lacked con
firmation. The true cause of the advance
of % per cent. on American bonds in Lon
don, was principally caused by.the rise of
the rate of interest. There is no cause_
whatever for a rise in the, gold premium
so long as our exports continue and no
bonds are returned from Europe which
would at once occasion a decline of the
premium on them here and make reship
ping unprofitable. The 4brindapce of cash
gold and the approach of the January, pay
ment of coupons ehould keep down the
price of the premium. The lively bidding
at the Government sales would 'make it
appear as if gold was scarce, which,is not
the case, but this is duo to rivalry among
the different banking bonsai, and serves
them as an advertisement that costa
nothing.
L2l
Bends, in sympathy with the advance in
gold, were firmer and higher, and the easy
money market gives parties an opportunity
to carry their bonds and earn the January
interest; the demand fdr investment, how
ever, is very light, and is confined to the
smaller savings of the Poorer classes, while
monied men will wait until file close of
the year.,
Stocks were dull arid declining. The
litigation in the New York Central caused
a decline from 1343,1 tol, 12134, and Erie to
136 X; Cleveland; ex-dividend, 8114; Fort
'Wayne, 11134. North Western shares de
'alined 6 per emit., on the supposition that
the CtTapany will be restiained to make a
dividend on the common't stock. The re
openiog of the books of the Merchants
trulon and A.merican'Express companies
advanced the shares about 2 per cent.
Stock dealings are tame at present; the
stupendous frauds\anditrie 4. ries among
the o ffi cials of some N octh oads have
made the public shy. t\
The demand for Allegheny Valley Rail
road bonds has ceased at the'advanced fig.
urea. The want of an Exchiinge where
buyers and sellers could meet has king been
felt in the community; yet, wheneVer it
was tried it proved to he a failure—we \ are
evidently not a speoulittive people. • \
Money scarce; and btisiaess dull.

• HOGS.
The market was very stiff and-conslder
ably excited during Wednesday andTlinrs
day, but to-day (Friday) New York ship
pers being .ontof the ring, prices receded
slightly. Thus far but two of our packing
houses have been in the field, E. H. My
ers ,t Co. and J.P. Hanna & Co.; the former
house has bought a considerable number,
and would, have bought more extensively
had it not have been fot the fact that prices
are considered_too high for packers. The
sates reported since Wednesday foot up
5,023 head, at from $7,25 to $8,25 per cirti
The sales for the same period' last week
were 7,230 head, and from Friday last to

the Hogs offering are fair, and the weather
is very favorable for packing. •

PATURDAT, December 5, 1868. $
, • 1 GENERAL REVIEW.
The Petroleum market, both Crnde and
Refined, has been remarkably quiet du
ring
the past week, and ,compared with the
,
week preceding, prices are lower. Since the
early part of the week, however, notwith
standing-there has been comparatively lit
tle done, prices have_ undergone but little
change. end the market ' has ruled quiet
but steady. The most important charm-
,
teristicsln the trade just now, is the' dis
crepancy between the prices of Crude here
and at Oil City, and a reported increase in
the production. To-day private and relia
ble advices from Oil City, report , i oil scarce.
with sales at 34;75 per bpi, which is frilly as
much', if not more, than can be realized
1
.for the article delivered' here. lin regard
,
t'o4he increased production, there is noth- -
ingliefinite 'or very satisfactory as yet, fur- -
ther than it has been rumored for several
days, and is generally believed. The re-
Ceipts of Crude during the week, were
/2,021 bbls against 8,585 last . week; from
January Ist to.date 1,038,713 against 602,315
same time last ..year. - Shipments east of
Refined were 2 . 2,244 against 1 17,042 lat3t
week; from January - Ist to date 673,574
against; 656,924 corresponding . time last
year. Sales for the week ,900 bbls
against 156,450 last week.
.
,The market conttnues exceedingly quiet
and rather - dull, though prices are without
quotable change. quotations may be fairly
Oren at 1136 to llyc for 40 tol 45 gravity,
and lie for 40 to 4 47. Thereas a settle
ment of a thousand barrels at w I - 12 c, but it
was a specifie gravity, and cannot, there
fore, be taken as a fair criterion of the mar
ket. As we have already intimated, a still
further advance has been established at
Oil City, with sales reported to-day at
31,75 per barrel. I -
