Mr. Hemphill, petition for the erection of
ages lamp on Smaliman street, at the foot
of Denny's row Referred =to Committeef
on. Gas Lighting with power to act.
Mr. Welsh, a petition from Henry Forth,
accompanied by an ordinance asking for
privilege to erect an iron clad building in
the Twelfth ward. The petition Was ac
cepted, the rules suspended and the ordi
nance read three times and , passed.
Mr. Rosewell, a petition from John
Roney, of the Ninth ward, asking for priv
ilege . to erect two temporary iron clad
buildings in the rear of his foundry. The
petition was accepted and the accompany
ing ordinance passed after a third reading
under a suspension of the rules.

Mr. Weldon, from the Committee on
Streets, preeented their report as follows:

gheny, Valley . Railroad to their works in
the Twelfth ward. •
One apppinting viewers in the matter of
opening Harmony street, Seventeeth ward.
The ordinances for the grading - and pav
ing of Centre street, Locust and Almond
alleys, were laid over.
The report of the viewers on the Diaintind
alley sewer was presented and adopted.
Mr. Fitzsimmons presehted the reportof
the Committee appointed to examine into
the workings of the Fire Alarm Telegraph.
The Committee investigated Alto tubject,
and came to the conclusion that -'the Tele
graph could not be . operated at any less
cost to the . pity than at - present, without
impairing: its: usefulness. The working
force consists of a Superintendent and
three--assistants; each-assistant stands a
watch of eight hours, and a ildog watch'' of
four 'hours so that if anything should`'
go . wrong in' the working of the lines it
can be attended toimmediately: -The Com
mittee - recommended: that an additional
room be -fitted up: with sleeping arrange.

The telegraph of= Allegheny Cit3r is what
is termed the “Village . System,' , • and has
gongs and boxes all located in a single'cur.
rent or wire. Should this wire break, as it
is now worked, the entire line is rendered
perfectly useless until repaired. There is
no means of testing• the - mire without
striking the gongs in the engine houses.
The telegraph in Pittsburgh is termed
the "City' System." We..-have running into
ourbffice twelve Cohiplete metallic circuits,
or twenty-four wires. We . test our lines
every twenty minutes, and *lien requested
can call .out certain engine companies with
tut alarming the entire department.

on Liberty street; and desire that no Other
rails be laid ' doin, but, that . ti Nicolson
or other improved pavement be laid down
and the thoroughfare free 'of any incatn
brines. They look to- the removal of the
Postollice is a question of time, and that
the terminus of the' said railway may as
well be at the corner of Liberty and Hand
