FINANCE AND TRADE.
OFFICE OF.THE PITTS EITROFI GAZETTE,
MONDAY, September 21, 1/918.
The gold market opened strong early
this morning at but after 3 r. m. the
market became weak on acconnt of the
largo amount of exChange pressed on the
market, and the latest sales were at 1.43,<,
with a further declining tendency. Tue
main support during the past week was
from the covering of short sales, and the
pressure to-day to sell was increased by a
powerful clique of bears in stocks and gov
ernments, who wished to arrest ill.. rising
tendency of the stock and bond market by
settling a large amount of gold On the bull
clique.
Governments were firmer. but the sales
are trilling: but few large dealers are buy
ers, and with the decline in gold, the gov
ernments will haVe to follow.
Stocks, against the expectations of the
balls, and petit speculators did not rise to
day. 'The market on Saturday was a fair indi
cation which way the market was likely to
go. So far the bear clique has suffered
but little, and they arc likely to succeed in
keeping the stocks in the hands of those
who thong'd, they could force the market
considerably higher.
Express stocks are firm from the id
creased business now • ()Mg.
Money is very easy. Business is still
dull.

The Crudo market was exceedingly dull
to-day, but a single sale reported, SO bbls,
on spot, at 11c, bbls returned. - There was
a firmer felling, however, and hol ers gen
erally'are endeavoring to establish an ad
vance. Spot oil was quoted at 11!‘ to 11;40
—one party assured us that he had an offer
f 11.16 c, which he refused.. -The principal
cause for this firmness lies in the fact that
the Relined market is nitwit firmer for
early deliveries, and the one always sina
pathlzes with the lAuer. Late on :-aturdaY
there wrs a sale of 500 barrels for October
