The same paper also says: It is no secret
that that the managers of that bankrupt
concern, the Atlantac and Great Western.
road are on their way here from London
and will endeavor to saddle the concern
upon the Erie Railway Company by pur
chase if possible, put most probably by
by leasing them the road. The affairs of
the Great Western are in a deplorable con
dition-and its earnings show a continued
heavy decline, and it has no loqk for any
improvement. The bondholders are en
deavoring to fund the overdue interest and
get the property hito their posession again,
and will recognize the Company, and make
the Hon. H. G. Stebbins of this city Presi

vanize the thing into speculative activity.
The property is not we; th to the Erie Com

for the property of anything above that
rate would be -a loosing one for theroad to

FINANCE AND TRADE.
OFFICE OF THE Pra - LbRUBOH GAZETTE,
FRIDAY, September 4, 1868,
—Money continues abundant in New
York at 3to 4 per cent., and banks and
bankers hare great difficulty in placing
their funds. The amount of loanable capi
tal continues largely in excess of the needs
bf borrowers on call. Commercial paper
is wanted and first-olim names pass at 6to
7 per cent. At the close of business on
Wednesday - large blocks of money were
offered at 3 per cent. without takers. '
—The New York Tiibune, of Thursday:
in referring to Government bonds, says,
The. Investment to-day has been heavier
than for three mdnths, and large amounts
have been bought by banks and savings
institutions. The dealings were fully $5,-
000,000, and well distributed on the list.
HeaVy sales were made early in the day to
break the markOt for political effect, but
without producing any result except to
further increase' the present enormous
short interest.' The Boston and Philadel
phia markets are bare of bonds, and the
dealers in the latter city are fully two mil
lion's short. The amount of bonds already
engaged for Frankfort for Saturday's
steamer is over ono million, all of them of
the new issues, and of theamount $300,000
are hi 67's, which are now the cheapest
bond on the market and the favorite with
the Gernian bankers. The large amount
of bonds now being taken from the street
will haw? a marked effect upon the deal
ings in the street, and with the feeling that
now obtains, that the public faith will be
kept with the public creditors, and that
the election of Grant will leave the settle
ment of the financial question in the same
hands that made the debt, will advance
our securities both at home and abroad.

PITTSBURGH PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OF_THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE, t
FRIDAY, September 4, MM. , . 5,
CRUDE.
The market was rather quiet to:dai, theJt
sales compared with yesterday being coin
paratively small, while so far as prices are
concerned there is no change. Twelve
cents seems to be regarded as the the rul
ing
price for any delivery within the next
four months, while from January to July,
sellers option, 10 cents is the standard
pride. ,We-can report IMO bbls for October
and 1000 for November, sellers option, at 1Z
and 2000 to be delivered between September
15th and October 15th, sellers option, at 12% .
There did not seem to be as \pinch oil offer
ing as on Thursday, and so far as we could
discern, the demand was not quite so active
and as already noted, prices have under- -
gone no quotable change.
REPINED.
The market for Refined -was also rather
quiet to-day, but as in the 'case of Crude, ;
prices remain unchanged. We can report.
500 bbls, on spot, at 303.1 e; 500 each Septem
ber and October at 31,1 c, and 500 for Octe
ber alone, at 31%c. The subject of pro
duclion Is again being agitated consider
ably, and as on this hinges the future
course of the trade, it is a very important,
matter. The production at Pleasantville.
Is now in dispute, many who are usually
well posted contending that it has been
considcrabiy over-estimated, while others,
equally as well informed, claim that it is
yielding all that is claimed for it.
—Since the above was put in type, we
cad-report 500' each October to March at.
29. 1 ,6 c, and 2,000 bbls Benzole, last half Oc
tober, seller, at 14c.
