The gold market keeps
.firm at from
1443,1 to 145 N; both "claques abstain from
moving in any direetion, but gold has - been
less plenty, and the turn of the market
seems to favor the buThi, although there Is
nothing now that could advance gold but
the movements
. of a set" Of determined
speculators. _Exchange is still dull, and is
selling one per cent. below the ordinary
rates.
Government bonds are strong, and
higher prices are looked for. The large
short sales"made prior to the decline have
compelled operators to buy again before
they could cover at low rates, and now era
losers by the transaction. The money
market remaii easy, contrary to all ex
pectations, and the facilities offered for
.carrying bonds are so great on an easy
money market that the operators fora rise
generally make the most out of the
market.
Stocks are very firmly held except. Erie
which is dell and lower. The cliques are

the market may go; an easy money market
may advance prices, and cause a double
loss to the street and the operator of the
West.
Express stocks are firm and advancing.

FRIDAY, August 28,-1888. 5
The metal market has. been very quiet
this week, the sales, in the aggregate, be

prices are concerned, there are no impor •
tent changes. The supply, especially of
desirable brands, is very much reduced,
but as is'nearly always the case at this par
ticular season of the year, the demand,
also, is light.

Was bought at 40 to .430 at the outset; since

have been taken at 43, 44 to 450, and in
some cases for choice Wools, even higher
prices have been paid. At this time some
large clips of choice. 00l are held by the ,
growers at 500, while other clips, that buy

FRIDAY, August 28, 1868,
CRUDE—The Crude market was fairly
.
active to-day, though,: In a • - very' compli
cated condition;, one party thought that
there wasa little firmer feeling than there
was :yesterday, whlie another was as
equally confident - that the bottom had not
yet been touched. The sales, however,
were unusually, large, aggregating .be
tween thirteen and • fourteen thousand
barrels, as follows: 4,000 bbls, to be de
bvered between Tartnarranct July, 1869,
seller's option, at 10c; 3.000., 2,000 and 1,000,

At the close, we heard of 1134 c having been

REFINED—The market for refined was
also more active and somewhat excited,
but prices ar.• no better; indeed, it was re

balers at quotations. Sale of 500 each for
September and Oct,ober and November at
31; 2,500, in threolots, for the last half of
September at 31; and 500 for October at 31.
We also heard it reported that there had
been a sale of a °line" for September Octo
ber and November, at 30;4. From the
above it will be seen that the market re
mains about where it left off late on Thurs
day evening, though it is still considerably
demoralized, and operators generally are
anxiouly awaiting future developments..
