Serious Accident at Al sville.
Jacob ?nicht, sou of Mr. Faieht, of Alps-.
1 -1 /le, a coal miner, suffered 4, very serious

.• at work in a-coal pit urge piece of slate
fell upon his 'head, inflicting a deep,' trans
..: verse cut from four to five inches in length
above the left ear, crushing in the' skull
-. and lacerating tne covering of the brain.
.. There was Considerable hemorrage and
oozing out of the / brain substance. Dr.
Ale Meal was summoned by telegraph and
.: found the boy in a state of semi-consci
, onsness, 'with almost total loss of speech.
' His injuries were temporarily dressed, and
4.3 was forthwith ordered to Mercy lios
--pital, where he was placed under the care of
'Jr. B. B. Brashear, Surgeon in i charge.
Chloroform having been carefully admin
istered, Dr. ° Brashear, assisted by Drs. Ml],
MeMeal and McGirr, of the hospital staff,
removed several pieces of depressed bone,
equal' in 'extent to two square inches, or
r more. Ttiefracture extended forward from
the summit'above the left - ear, as far as the
lriiddle of-th forehead, and backwards to
the Middle o the ear. During the opera
: tion a conaid rable quantity of gravel and
pieces of elate were scooped - out, together
with clotted blood and brain substance.
The operation was well borne by the lad,
and his condition this evening is promising:,
Fatal Ar.cldeat.
Alatal accident occurred at Scrubgrass
Station, on the Allegheny Valley Railroad,
on Friday last; the particulars of which
are as follows: Isaac Swift, a young man
about twenty years of age, was working at
a well owned by his father, H. Swift, of
1 Pittsburgh, and on Friday was drawing oil
from the tank and shipping by rail. When
the last car was fille‘and all but about ten
'lnches of oil takenTrom the tank, it is sup
posed that young Swift went into the tank
to fur the receiving pipe, and in ascending
,the tank after - completing the wark, was
',. „Suffocated, by the foul air, and fell back in
`to the oil.- His body was found on Mon
day evening, and an inquest held by Jus
-;
tics Marks. The evidence before the
inquestproduced, substantially, the above
facts. The funeral took place from the
residende of his fatherat the Galeriallouse,
:, on Tuesday afternoen.
A Brakesmetn
Wedniaday night an accident occurred
at Derry. Station on the. Pennsylvania Rail
road, which resulted in the death of a
brakesn4lnt 'named Burke, in the employ
of the company. It appears that the de- ,
'mused was coupling cars, wheli by some
accident he tripped and fell under the
wheels, which passed over both legs, mu
tilating them in such a manner as to ren
der amputation necessary..; The operation
was performed, but the patient failed to
rally, and died about four o'clock-the next
morning, a few *hours after the amputation.
The deceased was an unmarried man and
, resided in Temperaneeville. The remains
,- were brought to Pittsburgh yesterday of
ternoon,in charge of Mr. Devore, who had
been telegraphed for to bring them..
