RIVER, NEWS.
The river his undergone - but little
change:since the date 7 of our last report,
and besides,' it is now a matter of but , little
importance as to whether it rises or recedes
; at: inch` - or two, as navigation, with the: ex
caption of the Monongahela River boats, is
entirely suspended. We had several
heavy „showers of rain early yesterday
morning, and last evening several more.
The Allegheny River packet Echo No. 3,
was sold at auction yesterday afternoon to
'Capt. James Rees, for $5,900, cash.
—The following Pittsbamh boats are laid
up at St. Louis: Importer, Glendale,
Peninah, and Watianita.
—The little andniufient sternwheel tow
boat, Home, sunk on Monday morning near
Clarksville, on the Upper Mississippi. The
boat was quietly proceeding on her way,
when without visible cause or provocation,
the bottom dropped ,out mad the concern
went to the bottom of the river. She was
of but small value.
—The St. Louis Denzocrdt, of Wednesday,
says: The Great Republic is to be moved
immediately. Last evening she, was over
a wreck, with only one foot of water inter
vening... Captain Bill Patterson is Tycoon
on board, and has put'her'hold In a condi
tion that would pleases the health °Mears.
The Republic will visit the marine ways,
shortly, and be.placed in perfect condition.
LA young man named William Scotij of
Shipman, Illinois, received a shot from his
own revolver, through the thigh, as the
Phil. Sheridan was landing at the Quincy
wharf on her last trip. Br. Walker was
called and dressed the wolind. The young
man was' on his way to lowa, but since the
accident has returned to.his home at Ship-,
man. The. Captain generously. refunded
his passage money, and the Andy Johnson
took him back free. . •
—Capt. T. P. Leathers, of the famous
:Vicksburg packet . Gen:Quitman, was the
recipient, a few days since, 'of 'a splendid
meerchiulm pipe, which. as' awarded him
from' the table of Mrs. Agnes lizard, at the
late Protestant fair held at -Natchez, Miss:,
as the most, popular steamboat captain An
the Vicksburg ,trade. ' Capt. Leathers re
turned ktSsincere thanks for the kipd do
nation, and will no doubt long enloy the

—A late

N,ew Orleans paper has the fol
lowing:- Quite a large number of our citi
zens and others, congregaled on the ferry
landing and oh board the steamers Gen.
Quitman and Lula D., last ,evening, to wit
ness•theleat of the new life-preserving ap
paratusofDr. Rwavally. According to an
nouncement the Doctor harnessed himself
on board the little , tugboat, Little Jerry,
and wastakeri out into the stream, where,
he jumped over board, and floated about in
front of, the ferry wharf for over.a half
hour. It was a decided success, and every
body who witnessed it, departed from the
scene welt satisfied with the result.
—Says the Evansville Journal, of Mon
day: • Capt. Sam: Montgomery, the veteran
commander of the famous fleet Dexter, was
a passenger by the Quickstep, on Saturday
'night. 'Fred. Hartman, the 'famous stew
ard of the Morning Star, introduced
last night, to' his brother who has just' ar
"rived from Omaha, The two brothera.have
not met until within a few days,' for the
last eighteen years. Capt. Dunning was a
passenger by the Taraseon, Saturday night,
en route to Cincinnati, to bring 'down the
