appropriate for the day were said and
-the "Reproachea" intoned. As in Catholic
chitrches, no instrumental music WaS used
- throughout the day. A sere ice called the
"Three Hours' Agony' • ' was here celebrated;
. for the first time in America. This was
very similar to the Catholic service of the
same name. Whenever during the services
the Virgid Mary was alluded to by the
officiating clergymen; she was spoken of as
the "Blessed "Virgin," or as the "Holy
Mother of God." There be those who will
affirm that the service was continually sug
gestive of Roman Catholicism. The most
extreme ritualism is, to my the least, strong.

• • A, goodly number of friends of temper
ance reform met last evening at the Cooper
Institute to say a farewell to E. Z. C. Judson,
better know::: as Ned Buntline, who soon
leaves;for California, there to fight temper
ance battles. Horace Greely, among others,
• made an address. Ned is now apparently
thoroughly reformed, and is working earn
estly for the temperance cause. Few peo
ple who saw -him two or three years ago
would have prophesied this.
• Money is much easier. Business is im
proving. The Spring fashions are fully
and wonderfully inaugurated. Politics are
lively: Erie is in an absolutely "muddled"
state, whereat the courts and lawyers get
mad, and wash huge piles of dirty linen be

Is Anthracite Dangerous t
A couple of Boston savans haVe advanced
a theory that has already created sonic alarm
in the eastern • portion of our State. They
have commenced a crusade against anthra
cite coal. They assert that the species of
coal is unfit for use as ti fuel in.furnaces or
'stoves for warming purposes. The nom
bastion of anthracite, they say, evolves a
- large quantity . of carbonic oxide gas, which
is a deadly poison, and that it has been as
certained that cast iron heated to a point be
low redness is pervious - to this gas. The
deduction, therefore, is that the air heated
by anthracite is easily vitiated by this poi
sonous gas, which travels with the greatest
facility through the iron of the stove or fur
nace. It is said that one per cent of this
gas in the whole volume of a given quantity
of air is sufficient to destroy life. That this
gas does actually mingle with the
atmosphere is proved by one •of
these scientific gentlemen most , con-•
clusively. He •has invented an elec.
brie bell 'which will detect the presence
of this &as in the air. Ten minutes after a
fire is lighted in his stove, the tell-tale
tinkle is, heard.-The worst of the matter
is that this gas has no smell, and, therefore,
a person may bepoisoned unawares. _,The
remedy proposed by these scientific gentle
' men will hardly be considered satisfactory,
we fear. They suggest the substitution of
voreelain for iron stoves, but ' admit that.
wherever this substitution has been mdde
(as it has in many pfirts of Burope,) it has
been followed by langeroui epidemics."
If this lathe best that can be done about
the matter it would have been better not to
have shown the burners of anthracite coal
what danger they were in at all. "Where
ignorance is bliss; 'tis folly to.lie wise." In
trying to avoid Scylla they will only fall
into Charybdis. We are inclined, however,
to doubt whether the dangers of anthracite
• are not somewhat exaggerated by these
'icientific gentlemen. Certainly we never
heard of many people being- poisoned by
it. Science is fond of "sensations" some
times as well aspolities and fashibn. -

AT TIM CORONATION of the first Napo
leon, General Augereau, who had fought for
the Republic, was asked , if anything was
wanting to .the splendor Of "the scene.
`.`Nothing," he replied, "but the presence
of the million of. men who had died to do
away with all this." If, Mr. Johnson had
succeeded in his attempt to overthrow the
legislation - of Congress, and to make him,
self virtually a monarch, these words of
the French Republican would have forcible
application. Our fathers fought expressly
to destroy time power which Andrew John
son hag sought to re-establish. They assert
ed the right of, the people to Make their own
laws; he has asserted his right to overrule
the laws. Rad he triumphed over Mr.
Stanton and the Senate, the presence of the
heroes of Valley Forge and Saratoga would
have been as appropriate as that of the
ghost of Banquo at the festal board of Mac
beth.,Y. Tribulte..
ANTEDILUIWi MONSTER.—We learn
that Captain C. 0. Boutelle; of the United
States. Coast Survey, While making explora
tions in. the neighborhood of St. Helena
Island, S. C., recently unearthed a huge
mastodon, lying in a bed of marl. When.
discovered the huge monster was fixed pre
cisely in the position it is believed to have
been when it laid down to die before the
flood. The skeleton was perfect, but a por
tion of the bones very soft, while other parts
are petrified. The bones are of enormous
'size. Professor C." IL Shepperd, of the
South Carolina Medical College, and his
son, the Professor; who recently returned
from Europe, will exhume the Monster and
bring it to this city.. It is the first mastodon
yet discovered on the Atlantic coast, though
it has heretofore been met with in the. West..
