Catholic Churches of the , city: At St.-Alba/A the principal citadel of Episcopalxittudikm, the services followed" the orders 'of the most extreme "high oburchisra" -The altar, the chancel =rail trigs, the pulpit and lectern,. etc were ~ - draped black. The ,altar a drapery' had . .81:Ever fringe on the pper edge. In ,the -u , 'front Was atepresentation of the -crown' of thorns, and three nailstypieal of thosewith which -our . Redeemer was nailed to the cross: The large chancel -I.‘indoW was covered with sable. and on this. Was a large; purple cross. Rev.' Fathers Mor `rilf , and Myer officiated. The prayers appropriate for the day were said and -the "Reproachea" intoned. As in Catholic chitrches, no instrumental music WaS used - throughout the day. A sere ice called the "Three Hours' Agony' • ' was here celebrated; . for the first time in America. This was very similar to the Catholic service of the same name. Whenever during the services the Virgid Mary was alluded to by the officiating clergymen; she was spoken of as the "Blessed "Virgin," or as the "Holy Mother of God." There be those who will affirm that the service was continually sug gestive of Roman Catholicism. The most extreme ritualism is, to my the least, strong. ly fortified at St. Albans. , ; The vestry of Rey. Stephen H. Tyng, Jr.'s Church have, held- a meeting and solemnly protested against the findings of thateceleslastital court which tried him for preaching in non-Episcopal churches, and • against the minim:idol: of Bishop Potter. '• The spring exhibition at the Academy of Design will open on Wednesday next. The Private social reception will take place on Tuesday evening. • • A, goodly number of friends of temper ance reform met last evening at the Cooper Institute to say a farewell to E. Z. C. Judson, better know::: as Ned Buntline, who soon leaves;for California, there to fight temper ance battles. Horace Greely, among others, • made an address. Ned is now apparently thoroughly reformed, and is working earn estly for the temperance cause. Few peo ple who saw -him two or three years ago would have prophesied this. • Money is much easier. Business is im proving. The Spring fashions are fully and wonderfully inaugurated. Politics are lively: Erie is in an absolutely "muddled" state, whereat the courts and lawyers get mad, and wash huge piles of dirty linen be . --foreihe public, at which the aforesaid pub lic laughs "sarcastically." The impeach ment is still a first class sensation. ,The snow of yesterday has almost disappeared and to-day it is sunshiny and altogether - -radiant.JONES, _ _ = Is Anthracite Dangerous t A couple of Boston savans haVe advanced a theory that has already created sonic alarm in the eastern • portion of our State. They have commenced a crusade against anthra cite coal. They assert that the species of coal is unfit for use as ti fuel in.furnaces or 'stoves for warming purposes. The nom bastion of anthracite, they say, evolves a - large quantity . of carbonic oxide gas, which is a deadly poison, and that it has been as certained that cast iron heated to a point be low redness is pervious - to this gas. The deduction, therefore, is that the air heated by anthracite is easily vitiated by this poi sonous gas, which travels with the greatest facility through the iron of the stove or fur nace. It is said that one per cent of this gas in the whole volume of a given quantity of air is sufficient to destroy life. That this gas does actually mingle with the atmosphere is proved by one •of these scientific gentlemen most , con-• clusively. He •has invented an elec. brie bell 'which will detect the presence of this &as in the air. Ten minutes after a fire is lighted in his stove, the tell-tale tinkle is, heard.-The worst of the matter is that this gas has no smell, and, therefore, a person may bepoisoned unawares. _,The remedy proposed by these scientific gentle ' men will hardly be considered satisfactory, we fear. They suggest the substitution of voreelain for iron stoves, but ' admit that. wherever this substitution has been mdde (as it has in many pfirts of Burope,) it has been followed by langeroui epidemics." If this lathe best that can be done about the matter it would have been better not to have shown the burners of anthracite coal what danger they were in at all. "Where ignorance is bliss; 'tis folly to.lie wise." In trying to avoid Scylla they will only fall into Charybdis. We are inclined, however, to doubt whether the dangers of anthracite • are not somewhat exaggerated by these 'icientific gentlemen. Certainly we never heard of many people being- poisoned by it. Science is fond of "sensations" some times as well aspolities and fashibn. - WHEN A GENTLEMAN asked a celebrated divine, the other day how long . lie had been in preparing a certain sermon in which he had displayed even more than his at average ability, the reply was, "A lifeAlme, - So, if any one were to ask Helmbold, the celebrated New York druggist, how long he had been in building up and perfect- big that admirable system of advertising which has made him, beyond question, the „Veer of , the merchant princes; he might, with propriety, reply by pointing to the long years that have elapsed since, as .a be ginner in life, he first invested jiffs gains id the Columns of the newspaper press, with confidence that, like bread cast upon the waters, the returns would be both ample and • stire::, And, while yet:. a young man Helm- bold. finds himself a millionaire, with a hisiniss upon'- his handl Which,' despite all the contingencies of trade, is constantly in creasing. ;How much of this success is due to the liberal and-extended systeni of adver; .tising, of which this gentleman4'We most • 'prirmitient. represeribitlie, ris not difficult to ascertain, and is the best argument in yin- - Ilk:aloft of a system which, it is due.to say, is every day . gaining ground among: the live and'enterprisilig, business men of the coun- YL,'• _ Rebiabeld's drug store, No. 594 Broad way, New York city, is in all respects a model establishment, and is pronounced by. all who, have visited it the finest on the con tinent.
