APRIL 7, ~,,,
MI
OFF/CE OF THE PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
MONDAY, April 8,1868.
The gold market was rather weak to-day,
contrary to all expectations, but the ad
vance in cotton will increase the amount
of foreign bills on the market and keep it
easy.
Government bonds advanced sharply to
day and closed strong at an advance of
per cent.; the 5-20 s of 1862 are one per cent.
higher than.last Friday. Five-twenties of
1865 have advanced lg per cent., and' Ten-
Forties are firm at 100%.
The stock market is more active, without
any considerable advance. Fort Wayne,
Cleveland and the Western shares are
strong, but the eastern clique stocks are off
a little. Money very active here, but less
stringent than last week.
Closing quotations as received by Ph. R
Mertz, were, as follows: • t
Gold, 12A%; 1:.:1 bonds, 111%; 1862 5-20 s,
110%; 1864 do, 108%; 1865 do, 108%; Consols,

The question of who shallstand the loss
oncargoes of wheat when they fall short of
the amount called for by the bills of lading
has for some time agitated the gram mer
zhants and vessel owners of Chicago mid
the lakes. , A case in point has just been
decided by the Supreme Court of Oswego,
New York. A cargo of wheat was shipped
from Chicago and consigned to the defend
ant at Oswego. On the arrival of the vessel
at that place, the cargo fell short about 80
bushels from they amount called for in the
bills of lading. The defendant refused pay
ment of the freight -inless the plaintiffs
would pay for the shortage, which they re
fused to 'to. The defendant was according
ly sued by the plaintiffs, and the Court
gave a decision in their favor. .

—The directors of the Michigan Southern
road will meet April 28, when the dividend
question will be 'settled. -It is stated,"un
officially." that a stock dividend 'will "
made, and a semi-annual cash dividend be
announced. The expectations of the com
pany for the current ,fiscal year were 42,-
000,000, net, or 10 per cent. upon ita entire
cost.

OFFICE OF THE PITTSBUGH GAZETTE,
TUESDAY. April 6, 1868.
There was every fair supply of ',cattle on.
sale to-day, but with a good 'retail ,demand
•
and some little , inquiry for shipment, the
market was steady and prices, especially
for prime fat cattle, were fully sustained.
The supply of stock cattle was considerably .
larger than for several weeks past, and for
this particular description the market was
a little dull, and at about 10:30 a.-xn„ when
we left the yards, It looked as if there
would be some left over Unsold Good to
prime butchers ( cattle sold with but little
difficulty, and that,..too t at r ial' prices, and
there were but very few, if any, of this kind
of stock left unsold; and - asWetave already
intimated; there were' hit few"any kind
left over. It is said • that all the , cattle in
market this week were froth Chicagoi with
the exception of two car loads.,. It leaks a
little strange to see Allegheny drovers
traveling all :the ,Way;through the great

buy cattle; one would' think - that Ohio
could furnish all the, cattle we want, but it
seems that such'is not' the case, otherwise
