Gold opened at 18W, became firmer at . noon ut 139:%. and closed strong at ,138%. Moderate sales of gold by the Government and the scarcity of currency kePt down the price of gold during the lait fewdays, although there are indicatiofis of an ad-_ Vance during the early part of next month on account of the large imports and the' usual • demand for coin for excur tionists. Government securities were weak and dull early in the day, but towards noon, the money market was easier, and' a gene ral advance took place; 1881's are the strong - est on the. list. The investment de mand is very. limited at present and sellers predominate, and judging from the general disposition among holders of bonds, it May. be supposed that lower quotations are ex pected to ho made during the next week. In stocks there was a firmer feeling, but no activity': Railroad bonds - - are much ne glected and generally lower; also, State bonds, which were quite firm and higher during the excitement in Erie. have drop-, ped from one to two per cent. An active kgpeculation is going on in the Missouri and. Tennesseee bonds, which 'nre a. surer in ri-estment than Railroad stocks, and more Profitable in the longrun. Commercial paper sells at S to 9 per cent. for . best to . fair names. The demand for' money is urgent with hOldersef-GoVern;. ment bonds, upon which,/' per cent. has been paid per day to carry them, and until relief is had in that, quarter.little can be looked for in the general - market. During. the winter large amounts of _money were placed in government stocks for temporary employment; . these stocks are now coming upon the - market, and are a heavier load than can be readily taken. • —The New York railway stock market was firmer during the morning, and priceS wore well sustained on leading shares, but later in the day the market weakened, .and a heavy decline occurred on New York Central and Erie, with which other shares sympathised to a limited extent. At 4:30 o'clock the market was a shade: better. Ex press stocks wore generally steady. Gov ernment securities opened - stronger and more active, with an advance on the whole list, but they closed dUll and prices a"shade lower. - . . —The reports of railway managers in re gard to the condition of the winter grain ttirorable, and great expectations aro enter -Wined as to the spring and summer traffic. There was a general conference of iron manufacturers here on Thursday in which - there were .several representatives from other points. Statistics were shown, from which it appears„that the exports of Iron and Nails from this place, thus far this year, exceed considerably those of the same time last ygar,. and, it was also. shown that there are a much larger number of orders booked than there was this time one year ago. This shows the • iron trade of Pitts burgh to be in a very. healthy condition; • and as stocks are light, the demand brisk and steadily increasing, another advance is expected within the next few weeks. There. is a very urgent demand for Nails, and' it: is said that there is scarcely a house here • that can fill their orders = one firm reports that they are sold thirty days ahead.
