Vegetable Venders Arrested
The order of the Board of Health pro
hibiting the sale of certain vegetables le
being rapidly enforced, and quite' num
ber of hucksters and others have been
arrested for offering for sale the prohib
ited articles "on the sly," • Many , of
these parties were ignorant of the or...er,
which should have been promulgated by
lasting handbills in the market places.
The Board itself has no little difficulty
in agreeing upon the articles to be.ruled
out—one of the members being excel
lively fond of cabbages, another of
toasting ears, another of everything
green, especially greenbacks. The doc
tors also differed (as usual) on the veg
etable question, some contending that
all vegetables should be eaten at this
season, while others were in favor of a
strictly meat and bread diet. The citi
zens, of course; were dividedin opinion.
The Germans could not see the necessity
of proscribing cabbages, which they had
eaten all their lives, and never knew
sickness to result from its use. Creoles
and made° Missourians, who bad feasted
upon green corn from Infancy, were in.
dignent at finding that succulent article
banished from the markets, while green
peas, egg plant, &c., were. allowed to be
sold without limit. The citizens clam.
ored for. their favorite vegetables, and
the hucksters, tempted by the prospect
of largec, prohts, obtained the desired u-
Hetes and sold them elylyatlarge profile.
The police got wind of what was going
on, and, urged by the officers, seized and
confiscated the prohibited vegetables,
and arrested tbe venders. This has been
going on ever since the order was issued.
On Saturday eleven marketer' were ar
rested for violating the orders of the
Board of Health.—El. Louis Democrat.

Take the matter of crinoline or hoop
skirts, which, when they first came into
vogue, were assailed by all thejournals
with a fury and force that could not be

the fashion of wearing them spread like
wildfire. Take the matter of chignons,
which were assailed and satirized m all

the result of which soon came to be that
a woman would as soon be without a

other feminine fancies which men and
newspapms have set about reforming.
But whoever knew any such effort to
