Church, while recognizing the revealed

the tact and wisdom of the world in the

JUST now the country is shocked by
repeated instances of special brutality
exercised by parents towards their child •
rentuider pretense of family government.
It may reasonably be doubted whether
on the whole parental violence has in
retuted. It is safe to conclude that some
of the worst cases have, owing to con
catenations of circumstances, been re
: minty brought to light. It is graceful
and poetic Ito speak of the beauty, and
strength of, the love of parents for off
spring. That such love really exists, and
frequently in the most excellent sense,
does not admit of contradiction. But,
if the children should be adduced as wit
nines, and tell all they have felt of pa
rental brutality, the other side would
stand out in revolting contrast. Multi
tudes of fathers and mothers are sobadly
organized that they are incapable of em
ploying any ether sort of discipline than
force. Their usual method is a word
sail a blow; and much, of the time the
tdow conies first. •Parental authority is,
in its very nature, necessarily irrespon
sible to s large extent. It sounds pleas.
ant to say that the love that comes
with children constitutes their best pr o
tection against abuse. But If this be so,
there are thousands - of cases in which
the lot of his little ones is deplorable
