An gateresting Bit of Local history.
We take the following very Interesting
chapter of Pittsburgh history from the St.

Tile first velliel ever built on the Witten

When making her entry at the Cuistorn

the Captain guided_ the anger of the ofther

several months before the occurrence of

The Penhatene Annexation Scheme.
The ;Wellsburg (West Virginia) Herald
says, in reference to the propnited annexa
tion of the Panhandle section of West Vir
ginia to Pen nsylvaniar—“Of late there has
been very little said on this subject, though
previous to the war and the formation
of the State of West Virginia, It was fre
quently before the public. At that date,
such an arrangement was by many, proba
bly by the majority of the people of this
section, considered preferable to the one
that was actually cermummatod; but the
division of the btate and the removal of the
slave institution, was acquiesced la as a
general remedy for the grievances corn.'
I attuned of, end very little more has been
1
said about it. Nor have we recently seen
anything in regard to It Noritions are
In circulation In this vicinity, o If they are,
It is being done very slyly.
Solar as the project 15 concerned, we
have no. doubt but that sure a petition
iould be largely Opted, provided It did not
nvolve any expense .We have very.
benefit to expect from our con nectlon with
West Virgin-,the probability being, - that
we will continue as we lure before, a sort
of outlying province which it Is very con
venient to have for porpoise of State tax-
Mien. Our position would doubtless In this
respect, be Improved by annexation to
Pennsylvania, but whether the probable.
advantage would compensate for the' cer
tain trouble and cost, as things now, stand,
to farther to be coneldered.
