The Grand fury in its recent presentment
made an excellent suggestion that provision
be made for the election of an Assistant Dis
trict Attorney, to be chosen at the same time
as the District Attorney is elected. The great
number of cases which come up before the
Grand Jury in a county so large and-numer
ously populated as our own, seems to render
the creation of this new office a matterof Ina
m ediste necessity, hitherto the ap no intment
cir.an assfltant has been in the hands of the
•
District Attorney and purely optional with
him to do so or not. The new law would elect
as Assistant a legal gentleman with fully as
much - ability as the chief officer, and as his
duties would befall , described matters wodld
be considerably expedited. We hope the sug
gestion may not end with the presentment of
the jury.
