WITITE EQUALITY,
The Democrats and Conservative .I.u,
limns indignantly protest against waa
they stupidly denominate "'Negro
ty." They do not want the blacks, in pro
portion to numbers, to share equally with
whites the political authority of the coun
try. At the same time they are fhite as
unwilling to equalize the political power of
white people in the different sections. 'Co
der the old regime all the free blacks and
three-fifths of the enslaved were counted
in apportioning representation in Congress.
In most of the States, until within compar
ative'? a few years past, the free blacks
voted for themselves, while it was the con
stant rule for the whites virtually to do the
voting for the slaves. Now; all the blacks
arc free, and, according to the terms of the
Constitution, as it stands, all will be count
ed in fixing the number of Congressional
representatives each State shall have. On
this basiasthe Southern States will get
thirty odd members of Congress fur their
black inhabitants, the white folk doing all
the voting. The result is manifest. The
political power of each white voter in the
Southern States will be materially greater
than that of each white voter in the North
ern States. Clearly this ought not to be.
