bottom. Her disappearance was not no

—Hon. J. K. Edgerton, of Fort \Vayne,

—At Gazettcville, near Buffalo, a mA,u
ral gas spring was discovered a year ago.
Saxe that time various experiments have
shown that it is of remarkable purity, and
flows over 40,000 feet per day. The well
hits flowed in this manner for over a year,
and there are not the least signs of its ex
hausting itself. A company is now tieing
formed at Buffalo for the purpose of sink
ing a number 01 wells and laying mains to
supply that city with this gas. It is but
light and can be furnished at one-half the
price the citizens of that plum. are now
paying for their gas.
—The Portland Prroa says that from an
the information it can gather it is satisfied
that, notwithstanding tie heavy drains
that will be made upon various insurance
offices, the losses will be promptly paid,
with, perhaps, the exception of the Port
land Mutual, which office may be obliged
to compromise with the policy holders.
About one-half of the amount of property
destroyed, the same paper says, is insured.
No estimate of loss goes below ten mil
lions of dollars, while many hold that it
will amount to fifteen millions.
