SoBNO. 'ZvSrSQtr, VA. FUuturjr Bth, 1800 “We the bill, asfiied in ihe office of the clerk of ibe Cir-- coil Court. The strangest part of this docu ment is, (hat it makes no positive charge of a re* cent aot of immoralily, such aa Mrs. Burch and Mr. Smart are said to have been reoently guilty of, bat goes back to 1847 for a direct charge. This of itself would be sufficient ground for denying the dissolution prayed for, but wo suppose its the petition the lawyers have been carefai enough not to tell what can or hope to prove. “The case is to come on in the February term of the Cirooit Court, in the form of an applica tion by Isaao 11. Burch for divorce from his wife Mary W., and it will be a matter of interest, in all respects, the Union over: The wealth and standing of the parties, Messrs. Corning, Burch, and Stuart, the eminent legal ability which will doubtless appear in the suit and the interest of the case itself, all combine to make it one of the moat remarkable cases ever tried in a Cbicaro Conrt. ' * “Stripping the bill of its legal verbiage, it charges Mrs. Burch with having committed the sin laid at her door. “At divers places, and that, especially, the said Mary W., on orab<*tibo 14li day of Octo ber, 185<, io the oily of Chicago, with ouc David Smart, and that the said Mary W., bod, at vari ous other times thereafter, during the year and siocedbat time, but upon what days in par tloul&r your orator is unable to slate, committed said offence. our oraior, upon his belief, states that ifce !o'r d Uftr * elweea lb « 14th day of October, ISo9, and the 17th of January, 18G0, committed the said offence. “With regard to the children the bill stales; * “And your orator farther shows, that during bis intermarriage with the said Mary W., she ban bod two children of your orator, both of whom arc now living, vix; Mary W. Burch, who is of the ago of ten years and ton months, and Har riet Corning Burch, aged one year and eight months.” A Tows os a Lakb— lter. W. C. Smith, pre siding elder of one of the Indiana conferences, gives ihefollowingaccountof Morgantown,in that Stale, one of the peculiarities of which is (hat U is built on a lake: We read ef a city “set opon a hill,” but Mor gantown, in my district, stands.upon a lake! This was not known for a number of years after the town was settled. The discovery was made by digging wells to procure a full supply of water. The supply of water in the wells which had been used failing In the dry seasons, a few yea<-s since, one of the citizens concluded to sinit. a well deeper, and see if he could sot BlrikcTa strorger vela. When some thirty-five or forty feet below the surface of the earth, the uma at work intbo wollsaddenly struck bis pick through a crust; tbs water gushed op with such rapidity that with difficulty he was saved by the men at the windlass. In a few moments the water was some fifteen feet deep in the well. In two or three instance* aflehrard, men were near.belog , lost by cooing snddenly to this inexhaustible fountain of water. Ths Braca Scasdal Casc.— The Chicago At view, after tomming up the rumors afloat, and the charges made against Mrs. Bnrch by her husband, says: i “Before another week had transpired the was begaa to wear new aspects, and now is a matter involvedin darkness and doubt “Then came the, Btunning reply from Mr. Sloart that for months he had not trailed the bouse of Mr. Burch, and certainly was uot nhere on the day in question. “Then there arise in the commnoUy stats' mente to the effect that Mr. Corning, unwilling to beliete his niece guilty, U determined to pro* tect her rights, and has sent on agents to inves tigate, as fares possible, the truth of the asper sions on the lady's character. Tbs agent cr agents, and we are aware that they have been here, are satisfied that tho whole is a plot by a jeMona-hiuband to pat away his lawful wife. This, her noble protector is detefthiood to resist, and he has placed the cause of Mrs. Burch fa" the bonds of Mr. Beckwith, an cmioont lawyer of this city, who will be assisted by Mr. Merrick. These facts are tc be taken in connection with the rumor that Mr. B. followed his disgraced wife to Albany to settle the terms of separation betwixt himself and and herhis reception by Mi Corning was very different from what he expeu- I. “The cause of the banker baa not m d im proved by the manner in which be is said • > hsrs treated his wife subsequent to the alle*- i dis covery of her guilt.
