W. Cur tis, on Thursday night last, to prevent him from speaking, and-if need be to burn down the hall and mob the speaker and his audience. The base and bloody design watt defeated - by the no ble stand of Mayor Henry, who deserves the thanks of every friend of free speech in the whole country. Persons who have not, perhaps, kept up with the march of (mate recently, might think from the great noise which has bees made, that Mr. Curtis bad some terrible speech; framed after the similitude of the harangues of a democratic Congressman from Georgia or South Carolina, and prepared for the day and the occasion. Not eo. Mr. Curtis is one of our beet known Mere rizeen; the citizens of Pittsburgh have hadthe pleasure of listening to his voice and of study. lag his style in the lectures ha read here In two swtheseive winters. His books are timing the most delightful of 'the day. The Potiphar pa pers had more readers than most of the works issued from titepeese in the last ten years. His Nile Notes ehow him to bo a gentleman of learn ing and a student of the world over which be has so exttkiively traveled. He is a 'labeler of the Sumner stamp. He has not permitted the midnight lamp to burn out - his manhood. While be has studied the poet, he lives in the living present. What is the value of all his classical attainments to a man, even to Everett, unless he dare to do right jut now! To meet the ex igencies of the present as they arise! To cot in the living and passing day as those acted in theirs whom the world admire and have crown ed as the heroes of their era! e Mr. Curtis had prepared thelddress which he was to read In Philadelphia, menthe before. He had delivered it in New York. It was no mad appeal to the dominant passion of the hour; no shout, bi demagogue to his fellows; no denun ciation of men or of freedom. His address, as It appeared in the New York papers, was a - calm, scholarly production. In it, ho reviewed the field of American politids. Re brought the principles which the so-called Democratic party have seen fit to adopt, to the standard of patios and truth. Use measured, those principles look -2 ed "earthly, sensual and devilish," it was not the fault of that mild and graceful scholar. lie came on the invitation of a respectable body of gentlenten,to say hie word for what he deemed and what the vast majority of the people of the free States deem, righteousness. He is met by five thousand hooting, screeching rowdies, mad with rum and " Democracy," and is oared from personal violence by the noble daring of Mayor Henry, and the bold hearts of such gentlemen as Judge Kelly and others who gathered around him, In that city which Franklin honorecias the place of his residence in the days when to de nounce slavery was not held to be treason. It ie humiliating to read in the organ of our present adnalnistratlon, the Penuritironian, the iegretrthatalr. Cartle Was not eilenced. In a longarticlo on this subject, that paper eaye: "Daring the day, it to said, the Mayor had no ticedhat the lecture would probably lead to a riot, and certainly to eorce.breach of (130 publla . - peace. But he did neither of these things. Ile detailed nearly two thirds of the whole police force of this city to ..escort and to• proleot the fanatic Abolitioniste, and left the pity almost unprotected. A city of thirty miles in extent had the protection and guardianship, at night, too, of about 200 'of the inferior quality of a not very superior class, ex• posing it to the vagaries of the thief, burglar sad incendiary, white a few violators of law, who declare themselves openly in favor of a higher islaw than the law of the lan have a guard of honor of double that nu r. If the Mayor react a the largest liberty of speech, he could not the next day have compli . minted his police for their prowess, the princi pal display or which was in arresting a boy who, in exercienof this right, expressed his opinion that the Mayor should be tarred and feathered. Poor Philadelphia!" Ye who yet eojoy at least freedom to express your thoughts in a free State, weigh the purport of this language. It was the "duty" of the Mayor, "the plain duty," to succumb to a street mob, and to suppress a lawful assemblage, at the bidding of rioters and incendiaries! We trust it may be long before such outrageous doctrines shall prevail in this Commonwealth. A .Vltol#ll or Coeiroar.—Wo hove not fur days picked up an administration sheet in the course of our daily duties but we have been reminded of one of the characters in the play of "Ex tremes." Whatever subject was on the lapis, however happy might be the company or pleas ant the social converse of the circle in which Mr. Dampi found himself, the invariable collo . quid contribution which he made to the general fund was—" The Union will bo dissolved ; I knots it will! Oh hioses !" The good old National Infelligencer has a crumb Of comfort to the melancholic crew which eon ' template with such sad forebodings the gradual slipping out of the spoils from their clutch. It sayilhat as the beet reply to the statement that "the present aspect of our public affairs has t, seriously affected the pries of landed property in Washington, at the Endo of the building lots . near Lafayette Square last week, offered by Mr. Boteier, auctioneer, one of the smallest lois, and in the estimation of some the least desirable of • the number, with that front, brought the hand. some price of ens dollar and Hey cenlg per foot. The Chaireasn of last year's Executive Com mittee of the City issued a call, under the diree tides and in pursuance of the rules adopted by Ctivention of March last for the government of th Republican party, that a con - whoa would be assembled to place in nomination suitable persons for the office of Mayor, Controller and Venial:tr. In obedience to said call the citizens of the several Wards of the city (except the 3.1 Ward) duly assembled, chose 'proper persona to bold the election for delegates and elected their rep relentalives, or delegates, accordingly. Four of the Wards, to Wit: the Ist, 7th, Bth and 9th, de clared their preference for B. C. Sawyer, jr. Fo l ar Wards, to wit: the 2d, 4 , h, Kith and etch, deelared in favor of George Wilsoh—than pre *tenting the fact that these very worthyand es thimble gentlemen had the support of en - equal number of delegates. The Chairman. of the EXecutivc Committee of last year, to wit, Col. T. 4 . . Rowley, called the ottuveution to order and dectded, as it was his duty to do, that the dclo gnies abould hind their credentials to the Secre taries by him appointed. This was complied with. When the 3.1 Ward was called tree sets of credentials were presented and the chair decided that they sicould be held over until the colleen.' tioh was permanently organtud. -When the 4th ward was called an attempt was made by the del egittion to swistiiiite the name of a person who lode not a candidate before rho people, and for whom not a single role had been rail, instead of Mr. Rhodes, who was absent from the city. The chair decided that the aubstitutian in the 4th ward delegation was a question for the consider ation of the convention after all the credentials had been banded in. Afterwards a motion was made for the admission of the person named as the substitute for Me. Rhodes, and upon this motion lb voted yea and 20 voted nay, Mr. Saw pees delegates holding that the convention had no right to substitute or permit it lobe done un til they were properly organized. As goon as the decision of the undisputed delegates was announced the nineteen delegates withdrew, and, contrary to the usages, the forms, the agreed open rules of the Republican party, organized another convention, and after admitting to seats the; illegally elected delegates of the Id ward, nodtinated a ticket and appointed a City Execu tive Committee.
