It appears that the it after Mr.
Lawrence left. for Cub! to recruit his
health, in October last, im in a coarse
and abusive manner; tti ...rend., on his
return, called Mr. Haldechan to secamit for it;
that the latter retorted by charging that the
Harrisburg Telrgraph, in which Mr. Lawrence
has an interest, had frequently abased him
(Haldeman); that Mr. Lawrence avowed his re
sponsibility for all that appeared in that paper;
that Mr. H. asked him to make that avowal be
fore witnesses ; that Mr. Lawrence agreed to do
an, and that no both soon expecled to be in
Washington, he arranged to make the avowal
there; that Haldeman construed this into a no
tification that Lawrence would there challenge
him; . that Lawrence denies over having had
such a mime; that Haldeman,. (ailing to re
ceive the challenge, publishes ell the .iorree
pondence, in the hops of inducing the belief in
the public mind that Lawrence is afraid to chal
lenge him ; and „Lawrence replies by eay-. 1
hag that Haldeman' made the whole affair pub-
lie for the purpose of preventing thc challenge
which he fears.
We do not think that Mr. Haldeman has bet
tered his case any by the publication lie has
made; and we trust that Mr, Lawrence will not
suffer himself to be drawn, under any pretence,
into a duel with such a fellow. A legislator is
under supreme obligation to obey thelawr. No
node of honor can absolve him from that. He
owes It tohiscuself, to his oonstituents;and to the
groat State whose officer he has so lately been,
to resist all attempts to draw him into the com
mission of an act condemned alike by the con
stitution; the laws and the good sense of society.
REPITBLICAN COUNTY CONVENTION. —TIIB call
for this Convention, to cleat the delegate!, from
this county to the State Convention, appears in
on& columns to-day. The primary meeting' are
to bo held on the 31st of Deeember,"and the Con
vention on the Wednesday following.
We should have preferred the postponement
of the meetings to the week following, as the
time fixed will bring the meetings upon us, in
this city, at the very height of the canvass for
city officers; but that cannot now be helped.
Our friends In the country will see that thire
is only a little over two weeks between this -and
the Lim, of the primary meeting ; therefore
whatever preparations are to be made, should be
made at once.
The County Committee have also, it will be
seen, appended a call for a County Meetin g, to
be hill on the night of the day fixed for the
County Convention, to form a Republican Asso
ciation for the county. This is decidedly a move
in the right:direction. We trust thegentlemen who
will come in ns delegates to the Convention, will
come in prepared to stay over to the night meet
ing. We want their presence and their tid is
the formation of this Association. Severed dis
tinguished gentlemen have promised to make
speeches on that occasion ; and we anticipate a
very interesting meeting. It will lay the roan
dation of the organization which is to be carried
into. every :township and school district fa the
county.
Bat let not the attendance from the country
be limited to the delegates to the convention. We I 4
expect to see a large tarn out of the staunch Re- fE
publicans of the county at that time, and we '
know they cannot serve the canoe better than by
attending.
Tae IisPUELICAN CITY CONT6IIIIOII.--The
dread we expressed, yesterday, of an untoward
result in the Itopnblicah City Cotl•CillioE, has
been realized. That body, instead of harmon
izing its differences, split into two conventions,
each of which presented a different nomination
fot the Mayoralty. The nominees for Controller
and Treasurer, of both Conventions, however,
are the same.
We very mach regret this division. Al. this b
tune, of all others, it is to be most heartily d :pre- j ti '
cated. Just on the eve of a Presidential else
don, when every consideration of prudence and L
policy should prompt to union and hrtrmorly, a h
distraction like this is deplored by all the
friends of Republican principles.
As there is yet plenty of time between this and !'
the election to remedy this unfortunate difficulty, 1 ,
we trust that steps will at once be taken to that II
end. There is a sincere desire, we kpow, en the f
part of the great mass of the party, that the h
Republicans should present a united trout in 6
this, the first battle in the campaign of ISGO ;
and with that desire prevailing, there ought to
be no great trouble in bringing about a satisfac
tory arrangeinent.
The democrats are, of course, in great glee
it tho prospect which this division opens up
before them or carrying their candidate for
ianyor ; but we treat that their hopes may be

During the last three weeks of her Sinning
