EXCIFFOOCAOE or SOOOTtNO —l.loo6l4e.rablo ex- I , *fitment prevailed last eveniug, repast:thy in i the Vicinity of the• City Hall, on account of th e reports that the B.Ving Mayor, William McPhail, had been mortally wounded by J. Marshall Han na, one of the reporters of the ilaltimore Sum It wean; that Mr. McPhail, as the acting May a or, proceeded to the drum of the police and flee I alarm telegraph, which is directly opposite his residence on Holliday street, for the pOrpoee of 1 ascertaining the condition of affairs throughout the city, and there met several friends, with whom he catered into conversation. While thus engaged, Mr. Hanna, entered the room, and after inquiring as to the news of-the day and evening, conversed with the operators about general matters, as was his custom. Orie of the operators made some jovial remarks about 1 the shawl which Hanna wore, whereupon the latter drew a Colt's revolver and attempted to shoot Harcourt, onto, the operators. In the itement of the occasion, the weapon was dis harged, whereupon Mr. Mahan exclaimed that was shot, and walked towards the main on ran Mae of the building, but before reaching it he fell prostrate la the main entry. At first it was Supposed that he was mortally wounded, never theless medloarald was immediately summoned,' and Dr. O'Donovan's services were drat availed of. He - was Bien afterwards joined by Doctors Williams, Whitridge and IL P. P. Totes. Upon examination it was found that the ball had taken effect in the thigh, about two inches below the groin, inflicting a serious if not dangerous wound. Mr. McPhail waa atones cionvoyelto his residence and received the best attention. IL appears that Mr. Henna was standing out side the railing which divides the'roon3, while Mr. Harcourt and a number of other gentlemen, including the soling Mayor, were inside of it.- Hanna having the pistol in his right hand, Mi. Harcourt sassed the barrel of it with his left. hand, and thus. diverted its divection from him silt to a line running between him and Hanna. Mi. McPhail at the moment Was standing some feet to the right of Harcourt, on-a direct line with the direction of the barrel of the pistol, when he received the baltwhich was discharged. It is worthy of remark that Mr. Hanna did not attempt to leave the place until a gentleman present urged him to do so, fearing that his life might be in danger. We have just learned at midnight, from Dre. Whitridge and O'Donovan, that they have fears that the wound may prove a very dangerous one, as they are apprehensive that the femoral artery has been severed and will require to have the upper end of it taken up and the limb amputated below. Mr. Hanna had not been arrested at 121 : o'clock.—Ball. Amer. SCOLDING NOT AN INDICTAIILD OFFENci:Is Souris CAROLINA.—A woman named Nancy Stevenson was rooently put on trial before the Court at Anderson, S. C., as a "common Paoli," when her counsel moved to quash the indictment on the ground that it was not an indictable of fence in South Carolina. After hearing argu ments on both aides, the Court ordered the In dictment to be quashed, "on the ground that it is not an indictable offence, that portion of the common law relating to this offence being obso lete in South Carolina." The Anderson Ca:rtre remarks:7— "As far as was ascertained, thie is the third indictment that has over been preferred in The United &stealer the offence of scolding, and we hope it will-be the last, for it is invading one of the dearest righte of woman, and is, in truth, en abridgement of the liberty of speech in the fairer sex. The tongue is their principal weap on both of defence and.of offence, and as Irving has very facetionely said, it is the only edged tool that becomes sharper by constant use." It ie to be presumed that the fire-eating poli ticians of the Palmetto State are aware of their legal immunity, or they would not grumble and scold so much. Tan FUGutve /SBITRA CPT AT CAHLIELZ.—Car title, Pa., Oa. 29.—The prisoner in jail here for whom a requisition wan made by the Governor of Virginia as Albert Hazlet, woe brought before the Judge of the County\ Court to-day upon a writ of habeas corpus. The counsel for the pris oner claimed his disoharge on the ground that his name was Wm. Harrison. Several residents of Harper's Ferry were essmined and testified positively that the prisoner was -one of the in vaders. They had conversed with him and re cognized him. Mr. Copeland said he saw the flesh of his rifle when. in the act of shooting a citizen. No one of the nitneeses knew hie name. The Court took the ground that "ilia requisi tion is legally and formally right, hut there le no evidence that we have any wan in oar Old- tody named Hazlet, whom we can deliver on this requisition. We are satisfied, however, that a monstrous crime has been committed, and that tho prisoner was there and participale4 ; there fore we so commit him to await a requitiiiiou from the Governor of Virginia." AT the great Republican meeting in Newark, on the 27th, William L. Dayton delivered a most eloquent speech, iirwhich we find the following passage : "It is gratifying that in this country we have a yeomanry who are our pride nod eupport. In the South, labor is performed by slaves, and they boast that they own their labor, while the North hires theirs. Every country justly gov erned protect' labor, not to level the masses, but to elevate and encourage them. In China, the Emperor goes into the field once a year ; in Rome, the victor who returned crowned with laurels went into the field. In ancient mythol ogy, ebb stately Juno was given to Jupiter; to fiery Mars, the Goddess Bellona ; to Backus, crowds of bacchanalian women; but to Vulcan —the hard-fisted god of labor—they gave Venus, the goddess of love and beauty."
