The meeting at the Seminary was an occasion of great interest, anefit is hoped will be attended with blessed results to tbo largo namber of highly promising young men tboro assembled. Bynod was opened with an impressive prayer l>y Rev. Watson Hughes. rl Tbe clerk read the minutes of the preceding day’s meeting, which wero approved. Rer. Dr. Wilson pre sented a report and resolutions in reference to the Thocdogieal Seminary, its condition, prospects and tbo duties devolving on the Bynod in respect to that eminently usofal institution. The report eras brief bnt to the purpose, -'ll was read, accepted and laid on the table for future action. i On motion of Rev. Dr. Beatty, Uor. Dr. Lowry, Corresponding Secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions,_was invifed to a scat on the floor, and pro ceeded to address tbo Synod in reference to the pres ent state of the Board, its necessities, its coeds and the duties of the Synod In regard to this favorite Board, of whoso existence the Presbyterian paople of this region may almost claim the paternity. Dr. L went into the subject at socno length, and enforced the claims of the Board with great earnestness. It would be doing injustice to this able and zealous ad vocato of the cause In which ho is so hjeoTtly engaged,, to attempt a meagre report of his remarks. They were listened to with marked attontion by tbo Synod and we have a good hope that the impressions will be carried homo in the hearts of bis hearers and dif fused among their people for great good. His address was a feeling, eloquent and powerful one and was listened to with deep interest by Synod. Judge Maynard being on tbo bench ©a Saturday, and not having been there at former hearings in the matter at issue, Mr. ilippey briefly stated the facts which had previously transpired Id this c:iee. Mr. Bullcifk. who btiill tbe railway, tes tified that in laying tho track he had confirmed to the grade fixed by tbe Lawrencevillo borough aolhoruicv; that in excavating for laying down the sills and cross tics he had fiap-l pieces of plank oovered with mud and gravel! at consider able depths, an 1 that they were probably parts of what had been a plank road there Such was the substance of the mass of testimony, against tbe taking of which counsel for the plank roaJ had protested, as appeared on the record of evi dence taken before the commissioner, E H. Two of the men wire blown | into the Brandywine, one into a tree and the head- i less trunk of another on the opposite side of the creek. | Of tho others, nolhiog could be ascertained. A | strange feature tn the explosion is, that ihe horse > was not killed, although standing in proximity to the | press room, when U exploded. j The cart to which be was attached, and whU-h was partly loaded with powder dust, was thrown about in fragmonts. The horse was entirely strip ped of his harness —his hair singed off—one eyo put out, and one leg broken, after the smoke and dost cleared away, he was fonnd limping About tho yard, exhibiting all tbo signs of painful agony which: be suffered. To relieve him, be was knocked in the? head and killed. The Corooer visited the scene of the explosion to look .after bis interests, bat could leans nothing, as: the witnestes were all killed.— Their names aro William Moran, IS, Dougherty, Sweeny, —— Jacobs, Zobar, John Weleh and Michael U. Daniel. .1 29 S K> Washisotom Cjtt, Oct. 22.—Got. Wise, in bis Richmond speech, aay* ha bai a bushel of Captain Brown’s correspondence, bat not ail of it, A carpet bag full was taken to Baltimore and improperly used. The lottors in his possession pro Ted that prominent men at tbe North were implicated in tbo affair. Whether our sister States in tbe North will allow such men to remain among them unrebnked and un punished. remains to be seen. If any one sbonld smuggle off Gerrit Smith some night, and bring him to me, l would read him a moral lecture and thoo send him back home. He had remained at Harper’s Ferry, to prevent the application of lynch law in Virginia. After determining that the prisoners should be tried in Virginia, he would not hare obeyed an order to the contrary from tbe Frosideat’of the Doited States. He was ready to weep when bo beard that the outlaws comprised only twelve meD, and that they bad taken tbo town In ten minutes. There was no cowardice on tbe part of the people there, because their uoguarded cithens were prisoners, but he told them that they made a mistake, and if Gen. Wash ington had been a prisoner, and bis life imperilled, by an attack, he wonid have risked bit own, and) others’ lives as well—in making an attack without! delay. This Kansas Border Ruffian made a great mistake as to tbe disposition of the slaves to fly to his standard. The Abolitionists cannot compre hend that they are held amongat ns by a patriarchal tenure. The Governor urged the importance of organizing a military force throughout the State, and exercis ing Tigilanco to guard against tbe disgrace of a similar surprise. Sr. Locis, Oct. 22.—The overland mail of ihe.tflih uIL has arrived. Mr. J. M. Crane, dolegate elect from the proposed Nevada Territory, died at Gold Hill, Carson Valley, on the 26th ull A new silver miQO has been discovered at the head of Wasboe lake, and five teams loaded with ore were en route for San Francisco, far shipment to England. A Sacramento correspondent of the Ban Francisco Bulletin says that an active canvass has commenced for tbe Tacant seat in tbe V. S. Senate. It is thought that the Governor will make no appointment, thereby leaving the Legislature under special obligations to eleot as soon as possible after moeting in January. It Is supposed tba't tbe new Governor of California favors the election of S. W. Judge, formerly of Ala bama, so as to make the chances of a northern min ihimself, perhaps.) better as the successor of Gwin, who must he elected In the winter of I*4l. Mr. Wel ler will also favor this.plaa in (he event oi bis strength not being sufficient to secure his own election this winter.
