Tan Oklahoma Conference of the Methodiet Episcopal Ohuroh, at Its present scission is Day ton, has adopted the followicoriaaolatiotie on tha Enitlity question by the decisive vole of 130 to 10: Resolved, That we concur In the reeounmends- Son of the Erie animal Conference to so change our General Buie on Slavery that it dial( read "The buying, ceiling, bolding or transferring of any human being to be used in slavery." fiatatnee, That we reccomend.the suspension of the Fourth Reetricnive Rule, for the purpose specified by the foregoing resolution. Ateoltied,,-That inasmuch as "the great evil of slavery still remains, notwithstanding the strong Wreathes of anxiety for its extirpation," and Inasmuch as oven now after all the dlitouseion and legislation by our church on this subject, it b perbspe as difficult to convict and seclude • member for the sin of slavery as it would have been at any time during the last third of • cen tury, it is our sober and profound conviction that we must not any longer give plans to equiv ocations or compromises. And therefore Resolved, That we hereby instruct our dele• gates to the next General Conference to secure, ' if posalble,•ths action recommended in the fore : going resolutions. dud, in the event this cannot be done by them, that we hereby farther inetruot them to on-operate with the delegates from other Annual Conferences, te secure ennh action as shall most speedily and effectually tree the church from the .complicated villainy" of eleveholdlog, and even from all complicity with it. Thp eubjeot embniced In the &bore resolution Is one fall of embarrassment to the church. In the dirinitin of the Methodist Church into a Church North and a Church South, the Mary land, Delaware and Western Virginia Methodists Jadhered to the Church North; and in those States there are numbers of members who still hold ltisves. The strong anti-slavery senti ment of the northern churches has for some time Semanded: that elarcholding should be forbidden in a church which was divided by the Slavery question; and the rule ae above en dersecrhee been proposed, for the action of the Geiserid Conference, to carry out the demand. An effort in the come direction was made in 1666; but it failed la the General Conference for want of the neoessary two•thirdii vote. It wee then opposed by the border conferences, ae well ea by those in the Slave States; but since the ac tion of the Cineirmall Ceiferenoa the indlcatione are that the sentiment of the border conferences Is now the other way. The adoption of the rule proposed by the Erie Conference would probably have the effect of driving off the Slave State Conferences, and thus cause anothir division. It is the prospect of this which creates the_embaerairement we have ;Token of; and the moderate and oonservative men of the church are anxious to avoid, If petal bits, a contingency they dread so much. The antt•slavery eentiment of the northern pert of the church cannot be elided; that is plain, and yet, if allowed free oouree, how is a division to be avoided? Forman Sovsantarnr.—The Washington Con atitution, of Saturday, contains the cede' reply to Senator Douglas' slows on Popular Sovereign ty, A lling elz columns of that paper, and under etood to be from the pen of the Attorney Gen eral, Judge Biota. The position presented In this article es that of the Democratic Party, is that slaves erg recognized by the Federal Con stitzdion as property lit States where the local law BO treat. them; that they remain property when taken into any State of which the local law does not forbid their being so regarded; that Congress has no right to deprive their own ers of. this property, In the territories or other places under Its Jurisdiction; and that, as it cannot delegate a power which it does not poi feel, neither the Legislature nor the people of a Territory have any authority to prohibit Slavery within its borders. This la the doctrine of the Democratic party as officially promulgated at head quarters. Contrast this utterance with that contained in James Buchanan's letter accepting the Cincin nati nomination. In coning forth the doctrine of Popular Sovereignty, as then contended for, be laid it left "the people of a Territory, like thee* of a State, free to form their institutions in their own tray." This was intended to convey tha idea that the people of a Territory could, if they oboes, exclude Slavery. Now, to denies that the people of the territories have any power whatever to exclude Slavery He woo his cite- Clan upon the false pretence we hove byre quoted; and with true democratic aonsistenoy terns round upon and donor:woes all who will cot abandon it, and is using all his power, success fully so far, to Induco his party to be ao ID himself.
