Editors:—Senator Douglat, both in his article in harper and its hie address of Tuesday evening, asserts that the word State, as needle the Constant ion, includes both States and Ter ritories. Title queer article Manly. accompanies &letter from a dignitary, and even from the Emperor, being designed to remind the recipient that as the ancestors of the Japanese were once poor fishermen, the descendants, like them, should be Industrious and economical. Such a custom is worthy of the best days of the Spartans. For myaelf, I shall value my bit of fish akin from the Governor of Nagasaki high er than a gold: snuffbox from the Queen of Eng land. A few Japanese words in flaming charac ters, on a strip of paper attached to the principal article, rondo the contrast moat singular, If not Indeed ludicrous. lISASONINO - BACKIVAID.9.—We have been con siderably amused with an article in last week's Freeman's Journal, notice of which we have been oompelled to defer to Ltd:slate day. The subject io "The Protestant Revival fa Ireland." The use of the distinctive term "Protestant" was wholly unnecessary on the - part of our contem porary, as Papal revivals are things unknown. The point which amused us as a remarkable specimen of inverted reasoning is the following: "The peculiar feature of these Irish "revi vals," apart from their extravagance and physi cal exoltement, to this union of opposing seats. It is transient. ' It , Is moreover, In part, the re sult of causes long in operation. It marks the complete downfall of denominational Protest ism. There will be no permanent return to the out and-dried formalities of the confession of faith, or of the Episcopalian prayer-book. When the excitement of the meetings is over, those who have participated in them may try the old soot's for a little—but they will miss their 'limn lent, and the excitement is not one based on any dogmatic system of tenets that Canfield tho mind firm. There is a natural history of fanaticism and df errors. They run their course, end de aline and die. Thera is at the same time, a su pernatural direction, still bringing geed out of evil. These revival excitements in this country anti in other Protestant communities, are only natural recalls of ideas previously at work, nor are they altogether evil. COD6OIOOOO is at work in multitudes that are affected by them, and con ecienoe can have no rest till it conforms to the voice of God and to the truths of revoale i gion." Perhaps the whole eubjeot is not strictly a o gitimate ono for a secular newspaper; but it is at least as proper for dlscaosion or comment in the cob:mous of the Commercial Advertiser an in those of the Freeman's Journal. The constant argument of those of the Journal's faith against Protestantism, Is that it to divided into seats and lade the unity and uniformity of the Papal Church. Indeed this fact is not unfrequently adduced by Roman writers as a grave argument against the Divine appointment and religious character of Protestantism, and in defence of the Papal organization as the only true church. If the Freeman's Journal were consistent with the position taken by all Romish writers, and not unfrequently in past days by Itself, it would admit that in proportion as the different divi sions of the Protestant Church approached this ".oneness" of heart and sentiment, they became more like o true and Catholic Church. But that paper, regardless of the self-contradiction in volved, now maintains that the very things which it has hitherto assumed to be a distinctive mark of the true Church, and the lack of which has been its staple argument against Protestant ism, "marks the complete downfall" of the de nomination. The argument heretofore has been, "Protestantism is not a true New Testament Church because it is divided into sects at vari ance with each other." The argument now is, "Protestantism le on the eve of its downfall be cause its seats are becoming united and are bury ing their differences." Who can help being amused at a journal that thus " blows hot and cold," add stultifies itself for the sake of a fling at the "revival in Ireland."—N. P. Com.
