The Wyandotte CanatltuttOU—Preedom Triumphant. ATCLUSOR Kansan, duly 25tb, 1859. dfcsers. Editor.: Five years • ago a Magnificent section of obr cast dominion was offered at a prize in the great contest Incited by the repeal of the Mis stead Compromise. Thu champion of the two great antagonistic and irrepressible principles marshaled their hosts upon the plains of Kansas. The friends , of freedom entered the contest at great disadvantage, having hundreds of miles to travel to reach the bor der, through almost an enemy 'e land, while •the champions of Slavery were already upon the border in Missouri and Arkansas. The contest was made more unequal by the oppressive tyrrany of lb•Federel Government, administered by Franklin Pierce, en der whose administration it was s Rata passport to-fa vor to have committed some flagrant outrage upon the Free-State men to Kansas, or having done some thing to establish slavery in a territory from which our fathers had excluded it- But Pierre's perfidy to wards Kansas drove him from power, and installed in his place a man who 'during the Kansas troubles had been out of the country and had not offensively connected himself with the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, nor had he directly sanctioned the out. rages committed by t'ierce's officials in Kansas, and who many, holes the election, believed would • show decent respect to constitutional rights and fair play in the unequal contest, brit who has proved himself, in his roll hearted treachery towards the Dormer and Secretary of his own appolutment—Governor Walker nod Secletery Stanton—to he, if 'possible, more perfidious more and servile than pierce. iVith all these disadrantages, the Cause of freedom has triumphed, gloriously triumphed, in spite of the in trigues of Atchison and Douglas, the perlidyef Pierce, and the stolid servility of the heartless and facile Buchanan. The people of Kansas have again met in conven tion and hare adopted a conetitution—taking the Constitution of Ohio for a model. Tha Convention has been in session at Wyandotte since the sth of July, and is computed of 35. Republican's and 17 Pr.. Slavery men—who claim to be Democrats of the Buchanan school. The Constitution is out and oat Free State—no quarter given to Slavery. On the day of the election of delegates, it rained all day throughout the Territory, and the rote was very light, bat from the official monde it appears that there were 13,351 votes polled, of which 7,415 were Republican, and 5,1 , 39 Pro-Slavery. Of the meta. here of the Constitutional Contention 14 are natires of Ohio, 1, of Pennsylvania. 6 of Indiana. 6 of Masa ! achnietts, Kentucky 4, Vermont 4, New York 4, Milne 3, New Hampshire 3-4.leargia cod Virginia 1 each, England 2. Ireland, Germany and Scotland each. Meyer Robert Oralletu, lately of your neighboring county of Westmoreland, is the oldest member of the Convention, being 25 years of age, nod s very prudent mid - useful member. Be is • delegate from this county, which bat heretofore been strongly Pro-slavery, but le now Repaint.. by a handsome majority. Atchicon was as the name would imply, settled by Prti•elavery into, end con tinued to be their head quarters iota it leteome tuentlest that the coatat wouldvad in Kansas being Mamboed into the great fatuity as a Free State. During the lust year • great change Ina taken place in the policy of the proprietors of te town, and a liberal course has been adopted, and' Free State men have been encouraged to coma In and look at its ad ventagee Si a business point, which are unsurpassed in the West, and the resell has been, that Atchison has grown with great rapidity, and dull as times are throughout am West, it does not appear to affect the growth of the town. The cootinuation of the St. Joseph and Hannibal Railroad to Atchison, is now a fixed tact, anal it is confidently expected that the road will be comp/cud to Atchison by the 15th of Oc tober east, giving it the benefit of being the Western terminue of the Railroad system now completed within our "border. As Kansas is now beyond a -peradventure to be • free State, es say to all welting home., that Kansas invites them to a rich soil, a temperate climate, free institutions and cheap lands. To Republicans, I would say, roma and help keep K Buses Republican and free; to Democrats, come and me this splendid °outlay which your party wished to dedicate to Slavery, but rouldn't. SUAWNEa. An Unreasonable ISlde of the Union If the eouth chooses to make slavery the great, leading, exclusive topic of peddle discussion, no doubt it will be done no, according toils choice. If in every convention or public proceeding the speakers leap first at this mark, and beaten to de fine their position where they need take no posi tion at all, slavery will, of 000 M, become the central point of political action. 'lf Mr. Ithett is followed tly Mr. Stephece, and Mr. Stephens by gentlemen still lees necessarily required to die. CUBS wholly of elsvery, can any of these gentle men wonder that this topic overrides all other's in the northern slates? The south is now shaping our political course, as well as Its own political course. It is for the south to say whether the next groat political trial chill binge on slavery, and it is in the power of public men in thalami don to decide that there shall be comethiog oleo oonsidered in that canvass, if they choose to to direct public attention. There wee no 'amenity requiring Mr. Stephens to speak two hours upon slavery un the occasion of his withdrawal from the representation of his district. lie wholly mistakes the age ho line in, and with a thousand more each to aid him, bo cannot cause civilita lion to return along its track of a thorium' years. We do not wont .Afrloon stook" for the labor of this continent, and we have no need of slavery as 11 substructure for new free Staten. The etatesmen of the revolutionary age were not mistaken as to the right or propriety of slavery —on the contrary, Mr. Shut and Mr. Stephens are road on the subject. A diseased excitement ogninet advancing civilization moves them to do and to say what they now tio'and say, and as certainly ae time rolls on, this morbid slavery worship will die out, and absolutely disappear at Lhe end of a brief period of years. Just at this moment we need lho public atten tion to groat works of interned policy, and to those points which are engaging the remit. at. tention of every civilized State. We earnestly appeal to the south for the opportunity to bring these to 041 home, and we sak them to join the effort according to their interest and deka in It. Ilow is it with the internal condition of the range of Atlantic States from Delaware to Geor gia? Have they a fair share of prosperity In town and country? If not, there must bee ma son for it. There Is very little maul prcsperity in them States, as we all know. Agriculture does not Improve, and more land is thrown out every year to waste. There to no steam line to Europe from Norfolk nor from Charleston. Those States hardly pay their way as partnere in the coated. eracy, costing mach and bringing little in to the general stook. Every ,pablio man in the Union, in short, knows that the Industrial lyetem of the southern States, nt least, Is wrong on tome great and essential points, and though we may get a long tot rably at the morth under these oiroum. dame, we do so In elate of the groat difficul ties, an not because none are to be enoonntered. No so ulatlon of strength, no separation of southern Settee into a new confed eration, can- etreol any such change as that re quired to revive the stalls trade on a great scale, and to permit the south to measure Its prosperity by the multitude of its fresh negroes. It is obvious that the desideratum we meek is not to come by mincing phrases of careful con etruction upon the alsvery question. To ensure peace we must declare ourselves ready to fight for it, if need be, and to make a !dreary test, if we can obtain no heed to reasonable doctrines otherwiee.—PAila. North Amer. We well know itis not, wise, or per haps consistent with the teachings of religion, to give our sanction to what is positively wrong— what we know to be wrong; and yet in a choice of evils, may we; and should we not, select the least. A child, in spate of our best efforts, by education influences and home disolprane, such as we have been able to maintain, may reach adult ago and ungovernable, foolish, or vicious person; and beside the pain and anxieties caused at home by son or daughter, under these cir cumstance!, society, eventually, perhaps, the law, becomes offended by one having the strong est natural claims upon our interest and affec tion. If, at such a moment, we join with the world, and in an unforgiving spirit of stern jus tice, drive this child from home and our protec tion, running the risk of bringing greater mis conduct and perhaps ultimate ruin, on all sides we hear loud exclamations of—" heartless pa rent !" "unnatural brute!" If, on the contrary, we still allow our natural love to govern, and stand by the erring, renewing our private efforts to correct the evils of a life that is precious to us—then, it is •'blind indulgence !" " parental infatuationmid encouragement to wrong doing!" What course is left for the parent, but to en dure the world's reproach or scorn, and still obeying the beet impulse of the heart, exclaim— "my children and my friends, right or wrong!" Impartial or indifferentj edges will freely con demn and abandon, perhaps punish the mistakes or misdeeds of our children; it is an unforgiving world we live indmito of the heavenly injunction —"yea, 'twenty times seven shalt thou forgive thy brother." We are, perchance, the last, the only hope from which erring humanity may de rive the opportunity to mend; and at the very period when the ignorant and condemning world is most severe and unforgiving, it may be that penitence and reformation have reached the heart, where folly and wickedness had so lately ruled. This especially true of the young and inexperienced, in whom character is ever un dergoing change, and where, if error and vice startle us, it le mostly through the apt teachings and evil influences of older sinners—of-wicked and designing men. If, then, our country is wrong, let us still protect and defend her, until she gets old enough and wise enough to be right; and so too with trim:ads and family—let us be slow to abandon those that are near and dear to us, when error clouds their path.
