It Is a false conclusion that Piedmont, without consulting the wishes of the different peoples or the great powers, reckons on uniting the whole of Italy in a whole state. THB POHTOTCAL BTATEB. —The Paris correspondent of the Daily News, Bays that the bloody conflict at Perugia between the Pope’s Swiss Guards and the people, la con sidered in government circles, as a deplorable event, and tends to increase the difficulty of preserving the temporal dominion of the Popo. Theßcmans claim, the benefit of the Emperor NapoleonV Milan proclamation, that the French army shall not interfere with the manifestation of their legitimate wishes. Unless the Swiss jhall be supported by French troops, nothing is more likely th[sh that they will be driven out of Perugia by anorerwhelming national force. Gen. Gyolal, late commander in chief of the Austrian'army, has retired to his estates. Tax Beat or Was.- The river Mineio, which flows oat of the Lake of Garda, at Pesohiera, is a dear and rapid stream, only fordable at a few places in dry seasons. There is a stone bridge of five arches across the Mineio at Pesohiera, and also a railway bridge at the snmo place, both oPwhich are commanded by the Austrian cannon. The great Aastrian fortress of Mantoa is situated 1G milesbelow Peechiera, on the banhs of tho Minoio, which river flows into the river Po, about seven miles below Monfua— There arc three bridges across the river between these two fortresses, but these are ail more or leu fortified, and the French, wherever they at tempt to pass the Minoio, will be likely, to do it by means of pontoons thrown suddenly aoross tbeetream. The fortress of Pesehiera is defen ded by extensive outworks, and by eight lunettes, with bomb proof quartenfor tho troops. These form a kind of fortified camp. In addition to these fortifications there are two forts, ooe of which commands the right and the other the left bank of the river. The garri son has also the power of ionodaiiog tho coon* try by dosing the eloices which are between the take and the river. The fortress of Mantua also lies on an island, and has a fortified camp for 80,000 men. It is a place of immense strength,' being surrounded bj extensive swamps and a lake. Mantua has been for ages considered the strongest fortress in Italy, and Pesohiera and Verona are only second to it in strength. The Adige, whioh flows through the middle of the fortress of Verona, is a wide, deep, and turbid river, scarcely fordable at any point. The new railway runs along Us ess tern bank from Vero na to Brixen, in the Tyrol, whioh is within 24 hours* march of the Innspruek railway, con nected with all the railways of Germany. There are also lines of railway from Verona to Pes ohiera and from Verona to Mantua, by which troops can be moved with the almost rapidity to any part of the distriot between the Mineio and the Adige.. Wiixbe was the Mihczo Crossed bt tub Al lies.—The Paris Stale has the following on this pont: “ From Pesohiera to Mantua the ooarse of the Ulncio isabonlelx leagues as the crow flies; in that limited space the passage most.be forced. To attempt this operation there are cortain points : naturally indicated by their positions. In fact, i tho principal condition to a'ecoro the dtbouehe of any bridge thrown over a river is to drive the enemy away from the opposite bank. It is not difficult to imagine that if a spot is found In the coarse of the river where, on tho one hand, the stream forms an angle toward the attacking party; -and, on the other, the ground is high enough to command the bank .occupied by Ihe enemy, it wonld be a great advantage to attempt tho passage at anoh a point, because a plangiog fire ooald then be eonoentrated on the enemy placed in the middle of a semicircle of batteries. Now the course of tho Minoio presonts to an army wishing to force its passage from the Milan aide only two points combining these advantages —at Mosambano and Volta. On these two* raints ihe eteam mokes an elbow-pointing to the Test, and the ground on the right bank is con siderably higher than the other. These two joints were therefore ohosen In the wars of the devolution in 1796 and 1800 and also in the campaign of 1848, to force the passage of tho Minoio. Moreover, the possession of two for tresses 13taP«*oft»8wi -.ood Mantua, on so short a line, rendtra its defence easier, for the enemy have their wing perfectly supported, and can debouch unexpectedly from either of these for tresses. However, history teaobes ns that for; uncanny well commanded the passage of the Mineio is almost a certainty. A naval expedition, possessiogimmense means of destruction, is on the way to Venice, 120 flat bottomed boats, ebeeted with iron and armed with rifled cannon, are, it is said to ascend the Adige and the Fo. If Venice falls the fleet mny land a torpt d’amet on the Adige, and lake the Austrians in the:rear, while the land army at tacks them in front. At these, amid deep solemnity wbioh pervaded all, and ap ex cited awakening which stirred many,Bome where so affected—“ stricken,” as they phrased it—as to cry out audibly; after which, there was bodi ly prostration, as well as mental agony, which continued, in some a longer, and somo a shorter lime, before “peace” was enjoyed. The- news of these strange doings spread abroad iff hi! directions. Visitors from' Belfast, on the East, and Coleraine, on the West, came to see and hear; and some of those who had felt the influence, visited these, and Intermediate and adjacent towns. From village to village, aod from hamlet it has spread, and not only Is iho whole of Antrim pervaded by It, but it ex tends far ioto the neighboring counties. New towhlimavady and Berry, Westward; Antrim and Carricfkfergus, Eastward; Cookstown, Bun gaunoa and Armagh, Southward, are all men tioned In;.the newspapers, now filled with reports oMho movement, as visited, more or less slriklogly, with these siogular manifesta tions. Belfast, at the largest town, with the greatest number of churches and zealous ministers, with a baud of devoted auxiliaries is the form of "town missionaries,” is now the most eonspieu ous eeeoe of this extraordinary visitation ; and there ns elsewhere, It is not confined to one do nomination of Christians. It commenced with the Presbyterians, and is displayed most signal ly among them bat Episcopalians, Independ ents, and Methodists aU recogtmo it, and all participate in the blessing. The Bishop of Down, Connor, and Dromore, held a meeting of his olergy, at whioh they were advised to open their ohurohes and afford every facility for attention to religious realities. The Belfast Presbytery resolved to take advantago of the spirit pervading tho people, and their churches are opened doily, and several hold open-air services. The Methodists and Indepen dents have “penitents’ pews,” to whioh the awakened resort. Multitudes of all ranks, ages, and sexes, profess to have felt the power of religion, and the greater number are from thoso dosses heretofore not the most distinguished for solemo attention to sacred thing*—fectory men, mlil-glrls, and young men in the large mercantile establishments. There is, however, some controversy going on in the local papers, regarding the origin and character of the work. Among the converts are tome who had been Roman. Catholics and Uni tarians, and who, as tho result, they say, of the influence of whioh they have been the subjects, have relinquished their former communions. Tho parish priest of Ballymena, Mr. Lynch, and the Northern Whig, have refused to acknowledge the heavenly origin of a movement of which snob arc some of the coaseqnenoea; and (Cere have already, been some extravagances, and probably more may be expected, which bring discredit on (hose who countenance them. But the general results—temperance, religious observance and general morality, giving a changed aspect to society, vastly for the better, make the vide dif fusion of an influence which prodaces Bach ef fects, exceedingly to be desired. And, judging from appearance, that wide diffusion is likely to take place, and it will be all the more effectual if, os hitherto, there be do getting up of excite ment or displays.—AT. T.
