Tlia DetlU of UM«guui«. [from the toadon Times, Jnns 1&) Wo bare boon favored with tho following let ters from the eamo correspondent who described the Bailie of Magenta: “Mahonano (half way between Milan and I Lodi,) Juno —morning, / “While Milan was elill. in a frenzy of joy at the arrival of the two allied Sovereigns, this plaoe was thoßceno of a sharp combat with the Austrian rear guard, which bad occupied onif fortified this large town with, a considerable force, intending to gain ticao for tho retreat of Iholrarmy and b&ggngo from Pavla to, Lodi and across the Adda. This time U was the first corps of Marshal Baraguay d’Hillicrs which had Its turn. Three divisions of »t—Bszaine’4, Forey’s and FAdmiraalt's—had left the neighborhood of Milao ooly yesterday morning, toadvance on the high road in tho direction of Lodi, while other troops went in different directions to gain the Adda, and thus to cutoff, if possible, some of the Austrian troops. “One lookal the map will show you how im portant the position or Malcgnano was for the Austrians in their retreat, for its possession by the Allies eat off the retreat of everything com* lag from I'avia which had not yet passed San Angielo. Besides, Melagnaoo is on tho river Lambro, which, although a small river in itself, is a tolerable obstacle to tho advance of on army from the complicated system of irrigitton for which U has been employed. Just before the place itself three little streams, diverted into oo end of small channels, anile into one, the Vitta bia, coming from Milan, and skirting the road is a deep canal of considerable width. It crosses the road at some hundred yards from tho village, and unites to tho left of it with the two others (the Lambro and Mona,) coming down in a northerly and northeasterly direction; all three united flow through the town and fructify all the neighborhood, famous for tho produce of Us dairies. The country Is the same alluvial plain as heretofore, with tho ditches and willow trees round tho fields, the only difference being that the corn becomes rarer and bayficlds abound. “It was known that the enemy had occupied the town and its neighborhood since Sunday lost, tho day of his retreat from Milan, and that ho had considerable forcesawetnbled there. Tho dispositions were, that the-Division Bseaine was to attack the position in front from the high road, the Division Forey from the right, by one of the numerous byroads whioh connect the Til lages on both sides with the main road, while the Division I’AdmiranU had to take the town likewise by one of the byroads from the left. ,~ik a. taaeotm. “The three columns advanced accordingly. They halted on Uh rood to cook their coffee, which is to the French soldier what grog teto the En glish. After a short rest on tbey aa r . til at & p. m.» they arrived in eight of the town. The day hod been close, tbo rood dusty, and the march long, yet as soon as they arrived at the point of attack tho order of battlo was formed; lha center column with the Ist Zouaves and the left with the 15th ot tbo Lloo ahead, and the 10th Chasseurs a Pied and the broken ground in tho interval between the two. Tho right column was ased more for a Hanking movement than an actual attack, for the road to Magenta leads out to tho right of the (own, and it was not presumable that the enemy would hold much on tho opposite sldo of it. Tbo real object of this column was to gain the high road and molest or intercept the enemy’s rc j treat. “ Before attacking, a few cannon-shot wore fired from the bridge before the town, which the Austrians had again left standing. These latter did not reply: on this the order to advance was given, and the Zouaves, fall of desire to emulate their comrades who had distinguished themselves at Palestro and Magenta, rushed on with, oven for them, unusual flan. Ho resistance was met until they came to a cemetery to the left of the road, just beforo the cntranco of the town. It is surrounded by a wall from 15 to 16 feet high, edvered outside with tombstones of black marble Imbedded in it. The entranco to it is a large, massive gate. This cemetery the enemy occu pied in strength. Benches, from o little chapel which is dosed by the wall, and ladders were placed against the cncloauro to servo as a ban quette to the defenders. In spile of these pre parations, the resistance on the point was not : great, for already bod the 10th Chasseurs, to the left, turned the position. When they arrived at the river, which, as I said beforo, crosses the main road, and runs to tbo other side of (he town, they found the bridge leading over it bro ken. Nothing daunted by this, they jumped Into the stream and made their way through it in spite of its depth. Immediately bebiud the cemetery is a large farmhouso, which forms tho first house of the town on this side. The walls of 11 had bcea loopholed, and the windows were occupied by riflemen. This was attacked first, and carried. What follows after it was a streot fight, the let Zouaves, supported tho ild of the Line, on one eidc, and tho 10th Chasseurs and (he 15th of the Lino on the other. Every house was strongly occupied and obstinately defended. Concealed behind the windows, the enemy, suf ficiently protected, directed a murderous fire on the attacking columns. They never showed themselves for an instant in the open, but, load ing behind tho walls, ran oat and fired. In spite of the disadvantage, whloh occasioned a good deal of loss, one hoaso after another was cleared of the Austrians. Just on the outskirts of tho town Is a largo building, ones a chateau, and lately used by (be 'Austrians as a House of Correction: it stands lu the midst of a square, and is surrounded by a largo dry ditch. To this square a large mass of Austrians wero pressed back. There is a doable gateway, tho outer & square tower, haring evidently once been con nected by a drawbridge with the inner one; now a causeway leads over it, and through this the Austrians bad to make their way. They wore caught by the Zouaves, and a number of them bayonetted. Those who got through in tlmo ran to the garden which leads off tho courtyard Into tho fields. A massive iron gato separates the two, and the Austrians found moans to shut this. The building on all other sides Is surrounded by a ditch, flanked with masonry about 10 to 20 feet high, so that there was no issue on that side. Besides, the Austrians had thrown up some earthworks In the fields facing it. But this Interruption lasted only jnst long enough to al low another body to go round, and, once In the open field, it was child's play. “ In an. hour and a half the Austrians wero driven out of the town with a loss of 1,000 pris oners, ono gun and at least 4,000 dead and wounded. By tbo lime this was done, tho Divi sion of Forey hod come np on a byroad on the flank of tho Austrian lino of rctroat, and opened out with two batteries upon tho close columns whloh had to defile before them. I need not say that it rendered the retreat of tho Austrians more precipitate. “Tho losses on onr side, though not yet dis tinctly known, are ecvero, as must Always be the ease In a street fight, especially if, ont of consideration for the property of onr friends wo abstain from using tho most effective means in such a case. “Snob combats, however, have Inis advantage, they give confidence to the soldier, for it he can be viotorious under suoh dlffioult circumstances' he thinks he can do almost anything.” Harvest. —The Portsmouth (0.) Triburu says that a farmer who had lived In that county forty years, stated that he had never known a better crop of wheat than the ono now beiog harvested. The Zanesville Courier says: “As we have before stated, we think the crop will be as large as it has been for two years past. For, though some fields have been badly in jured, If not entirely destroyed by the frost, neither weevil nor rust have done any damage whatever, so far as weeas bsar; and the effects of the frostarsnotiobadas At first reported.’ l Tun FntsT Nomihatioh foil m I —Whoever has looked into oar photographic 1 galleries on Broadway has been smiled upon by < a good-natured, and mild countenance, which ! seems to be remarkably in Us place as a specimen ! portrait, and particularly adapted to give a favorable impression of the degree of content ment which may be enjoyed in this world. It is a countcnanco that gives offence to nobody, that seems to fall in with everybody’s humor, that harbors no strength of purpose, that Is Dover roused to a decided wrlnldo by a vigorous thought, that never loses its suavity of expres sion, that protests against severe intellectual labor, aud prays that all disturbing questions may be kept at a safe distance. It bos no par ticular views to express on any subject, but it consents to bo supposed to entertainthoopinion that none bat native born American citizens ought to be permitted to vote or to hold of&eo in the United States. It is not tenacious, how ever, of Ibis dogma. If any other opinion, mod erately expressed, can attract more votes, (be face will adopt it; for it would prefer to offend a minorityrather than amajority, if offence mast, be given, thongh it will amiably endeavor to con ciliate both. TICIIMS I This portrait is the first nomination actually in the field, for tho Presidency. Unfortunate ly for the type, the times are strong and nervous. Questions that won’t be dallied with, are up for decision, and tho country wants a brain that can seizo them with a decided grip. To eay nothing of tho tariff, and of tho harbor Improvements, there arc the questions of polygamy, of national piracy by lawless filHbnstcrs, tho revival of the African slave trade, and, If we believe tho threats of Southern pollcians, there may arise the ne cessity to knock on the head that ridicnlous but mischievous Gorgon, nullification. With tho smiling, good-natured pholographio specimen portrait in the Presidential chair, wc would not know what not to apprehend. With a strong Southern heel there, we would know. If the Constitution is to be trodden upon, let that do it, in preferenoo to tho polished toe of a North ern doughface. It Is easier to deal with wicked ness than with weakness! A sturdy, self-willed, feudal tyrant, with one hand on Africa, and the other yielding tt elave whip ready to laah New York 6r Congo, which ever lags in obedience, can never destroy the Constitution. Suoh mus cular treatment of affairs, would bring oat the opposition muscle and leave that instrument than beforo. But in tho hands of good natured photograph, it would decompose inward ly. If would be the prey of eternal rottenness, while presenting suoh outward appearances of he<hlas would lull the people laio security. Nothing is so fatnl'to integrity as asmoothf&ce. It looks on all changes with smiling equanimity. No maber whether tho sun shine, ora hurricane blow—jwbciher peace possesses tho State, or whether it is torn by intrigue or sooiai war, that smooth face is a curtain to hide plots and conspi racies which all centre in the man bebio’d it, who bos not mental or moral strength to do ono sin-, glc, strong, outright manly action, good or bod. — Cer.lury. Tun Swino as a Cube roa Consumption.—Dr. Lawson Long, of Holyoke, Mass., writes to tho editor of the Springfield Republican os follows : " 1 fish-to say a few words to “whom it may concern” on the nso of the swing, one of the gymnastic exercises, os a preventive and core ,of pulmonary disease. 1 mean the suspending of tho body by the bands, by means of a strong rope, Or chain, fastened to a beam at ono end, and at the other a slick three feet long, conve nient ip grasp with the hands. The rope should be faslencd to the center of the stick, which should bang six or eight inches above tho head. Let a pereon grasp this stick, with tho hands two or three feet apart, and swing very moder ately, at first—perhaps only bear tho weight if very wcot—and gradually Increase, as the mus clts gain strength from tho exercise, until it may bo freely used from three to five limes doily. Tho connection of the arms with the body (with the exception of tho olaviclo with the ster num or breast-boQC,) being a muscular attach ment to tho ribs, the effect of this exercise is to derate the fibs aud enlarge the chest; and ns nature allows no vacuum, the lungs expand to fill tho cavity, increasing the volume of air—tho natural puriGsr of ibe blood—and preventing congestion or tho deposit of tuberculous matter. I bavo prescribed tho above for ail oases of he morrago of tho lungs and threatened consump tion for thirty-five years, and have been able to iocreaso the measure of the ohest from two to four laches within a few mootbe, and always with good results. But, especially, as a preven tive, I would recommend this exercise. Let ifibao who love life cultivate a well-formed, ca pacious chest. Tho student, the merchant, the sedentary, the young of both sexes—aye, all should have a swing upon wh oh to stretch them selves daily; and lam mot ally certain that if this wero to bo practiced bj the rising genera tion, in o dress allowing a free and full devel opment of tho body, thousands, yes tens of thou sands would bo saved from the ravages of that opprobrium mcdicoram, consumption.” By. suoi’E,"" . • MERC HA XT TAILOR.
