This -nicely printed and neatly bound hook
presents some fifteen hundred illustrations of
the derivation and secret history of English
words. The readers of Putuani'n Monthly,
when that Magazine was in he ' , then, will re
member a series of chapters on words, that at
the time attracted great attention. They were
written, an le this book, in a peculiarly racy and
attractive etyle, somewhat in the vein of Horne
Tooke's celebrated' Diversione of Purley, or
Trench's admitable philological eneayr. Words
are the nucleon around which cluster the history
of the workings of mind. The great thoughts
struggle into dimple and take form, BO to speak, in
great minds, but they need aortae vehicle through
which they may become locomotive. The thought
incarnate, itself in speech. This reems to be
the idea of the preeent work. With this clue
the intelligent reader (and nosh only will be in
tereeted in ibis book) will find his way through
the work now beforerun with profit and delight.
We could nay much more on this subject, but the
above will suffice to commend this book to our
readere, who are, of course, all intelligent.

Wm. Eia.torr laid before the Mayor, on Mon
day, n complaint against the firm of Dungity
Smith, builders, who are erecting Brewer's block
on the corner of Market and Fifth streets. The
complainant alleged that the said builders put
their material in the street in front of his
store, and thereby obstructed the en
trance to bis store, to the detriment of bis bug
berg.
The Mayor decided that under the ordinance
of 1816, builders hsvo a right to as much room
on the street as is necessary for their immediate
use for building tiurposes. The ordinance does
not designate the length on the etreet, which
may be taken up by the piles of material, but
provides that half the street as well as the gut
ters roust remain free and unobstructed. The
20th section of the aforesaid ordinance prohibits
the sifting or riddling of dry Buie on the public
highway in building houses or—stores. Now it
appeared in the course of the examination that
these builder. had obstructed the gutters and
had sifted limo. A fine of $6 was imposed on
this account.

body was brought to tho city on Sunday evening
after en ioqueet had been held. It wee taken

compelled to bury the body, owing to the rapid
progress of decomposition. No one came for

light colored calico dress, with small black epole,

undertaker took temples of her dress and apron,
which can be seen by any who may think them

Mr. Talum'e process ie eimple in the extreme;
the candle of common "stock," when molded or
dipped in the usual way, is immereed in a vat
of liquid fat and gums of such a nature that it
adheres to the tallow, and forms a thin coating
outelde it; and then the candle is dipped in so
other composition, whose bane ie /demi° acid,
which will not itself adhere to tallow, but will
adhere to the intermediate composition. This
gives the csndles an indurated coating, which,
being fusible at a much higher temperature than
the tallow, ! causes the candle to burn with a
beautiful cup-shape, prevents guttering, and
improves the light. All grease is prevented;
and on the hottest day they will remain as hard
and clean RS in winter.
This improvement le a valuable one to the can
dle trade, no it will give an excellent appearance
to any "stock," and greatly improves the qual
ity of the candles in their illuminating power
and aaleablenees, besides extending their use,
and giving them greater facilities to replace
burning Sold.
We are told by philosophers (and they ought
to know) that the progress of the ages is devel-

suppose that Macbeth, when next he calls
"What ho there! lights!" instead of being served
with torches, will be answered by an array of In
durated candles.
