lirEDNEaDiy. lIDELNING,-.IIAY 18; . 1859 _tfanza-Dsaritie• wee' Er Leans—The New York etyriolleral Tizetraegine, for 1855, contain 'sire:7ood example of like benefits of Judicious imder-drainlng, which may serve as an boon tire to some of one reader* who bare a like patch on some portion of their fermi, that at present is of no use to them, but merely a blotch upon en otherwise good piece. It to known-that swam py eons, after they are sweetened by exposure to the sun and air, become the most productive, containing as they do all the elements of vegeta ble growth in abundance, but the presence of a superstandance of cold water hinders the growth of the cultivated grasses or any other useful crop. Hr. John Johnson, near Geneve, obtained premiere for reclaiming swamp land. "The lot when It came into his possession, was - overgrown with email trees, bushes, willows, bopgrtu, according_io the surface ; being a rough union - piece, full of holes, in which water stood the greater part of the year. The :soil was vegetable. mold, interspersed with clay knolls; the enbeeil a tenacious clay, and it re ceived the water running froth a large tract of surrounding lands. The first Work done upon it was the semen after its purchase, when the trees and bench were cut off and burned, and an open ditch run through the lowest part, which carried off the greater part of the surface water and im proved Wmatorially, but still left it too wet for successful tillage.. In 1865, Mr. Johnson finished the work by thoroughly uoderdraining his field. He cut a main ditch thirty inches deep, through the lowest part of the — awanip, patting six inch We in the esme, (after finishing side drains,) the whole expense being GO?! eta. per 'rod, or about $25 for forty-two rode. Into this, cross drains wereled at about two rods apart, at nearly right angles with the main drain, 120 rods being.laid with two loch tile, and 510 rode with one and a half inch tile, the total cost of the lat ter drains being sq cents per rod, that of the former four cents more. In the main drain the tile were laid upon boards, to 'bemire them from sinking unevenly into the soil, or from being Ailed up from its pressure from beneath—a pre caution often required in cases of large aired horse shoe tile, on any but hardpan, gravelly soil. Now for the result.. As the drains pro greesed, the water began to disappear from the surface, and within about one week after the drains were dug, the water entirely disappeared from the lowest places. The effect was striking te every one who saw it; that portion drained being entirely dry, while the other portion im mediatelyj elutes was literally soaked with water, and as feet as the drains progressed the water would rapidly disappear. Tho experiment has proved entirely eatiefactory. It is now ono of driest lots on the farm; fit to work at any time and prhducing abundantly. Tho expense of draining was about $26 per acre. Sometime/is liming swampy soils, after they are under-drained r has a good effect, the alkali of the limo neutralizing the acid in the soil. It sometimes happens that the swamp, especially if Peaty, has a subsoil of marl; but this is not in the condition of caustic lime, and cannot pro duce the effect so rapidly. Carrying the water off, by large open drains, fora year or two before under-draining, is a , good plan, as by this means the soil has time to setae, and become more imitable for tile laying. • Tim Tramo.—A name which is in every ono's month Should be correctly pronounced.
