WEI)NEBD2iIr APRII. 27,1869 t v o. , o ms_eparrers.dstmeraana ' FZIDINO Hoes oar liar.—There it not en :animal on the list of our domestic tribe, in whose care there is more disparity of treat ment:thin that of the hog. And none probe towards widch more really erroneous ideas are entertained 'of his needs, of his capacities, :or of hii ability to recompense the care and attention due him as a member of the farm yard. circle. In very many, perhaps I might say m a great majority of instances, he is the subject of the most unwarrantable neglect stud though naturally hardy and trained by usage to acquiesce in the severest hardships, his elongated countenance and his shattered constilation, his feeble appetite, and emacia ted and shivering frame, serve as a just(though unheeded) rebuke upon his keeper's inhuman ity. Animals so treated vary in their acknowl edgements to their owners by way of returns for the bountyof life, and same thirteen month; starvation, and say three of partial access to corn and.--pumpkins; - from 150 to 200 ::;;pounds of rather streaky bacon. Now this ;Tama is highly objectionable and even rep - :Agettensible on the score of its inhumanizing effect on all concerned in it. And in order to show that a humane and generous course to. * wards even a bog, will pay, I may mention " that my neighbor, J. U. Y. sold, the past :-:'week, a lot of pigs months old, some of , '"-..which weighed over 250 pounds, and I have ....,-myself fed them to average 325 pounds each at 8 months old. . . . . • There is a diversity of opinion respecting • the economy of eonfirang pigs in the pen. My idea of this matter -is, that under judicious treatment in other respeCts confinementfor the moat part is decidedly the most economical. But, of course, their treatment mast be so managed, as to secure a healthy and vigor ous. appetite. And I have not the slightest doubt from careful !xperiments conducted with a view of determining the matter, that it pays well to g • ratify, their appetites. In order to maintain a healthy condition of the digestive and secretory organs, two or three thipgs are essential. The first of these is to supply them with wholesome food in suit able quantity at regular intervals, in such va riety as will conform to the demands of their nature. In our artificial treatment of domes tic animals, as well as of trees, and plants, due reference must be bud to the natural laws by which these are governeA. So, then as the hogis by nature disposed to muzzle in the • earth for roots, /to., and persist in reaching it, often at expense of hard digging, I have, in order to meet this demand of his nature, had recourse to sods from the Wayside or woods earth occasionally thrown to them, which never fails to afford them much grafi- - - fication. In the treatment of stock hogs, in addition to a suitable amount of ground plan given in slop, they should have their daily al lowance of green clover or vase- or when these are not available, as in winter, a liberal supply of "hay &cede" from the barn should be mixed with their slop, either of which they will eat with avidity; and at the smile time they derive as much nourishment from this as they dould'by grazing on a fresh cloverfield, the condition requisite to the maintenance of general health and uniform thrift are thus se cured; and from any observations that I have been able to make, I know of no method by which so great an amount of growth and weight can be induced with equal cost of feed in the winter season as by this haying system. My plan of coming at it, iota have the barn entry cleared up every day, the hay being raked away carefully, the clover heads, leaves de., remaining, are thrown into a cask kept for that purpose. A portion of this is placed in the hog-trough at each feeding previous to throwing in the slop, and if the tidy is sound thy will devour the whole with as much zest as can be desired- The advantages of this treatment will be obvious to any one on a lit tle reflection; and its practicability rendered equally so by any fair experiment. Shoats of three months are old enough to commence eating jilia kind of food; though it should be given in small quantities at first, and may af terwards he increased as their capacity for managing it increases: I believe the manure which may be made and saved by keeping hogs penned, will more than repay any trouble it may be to care for them, and if this care is judiciously applied, greater returns may be realized from the capital employed, than by allowing them to run at large.
