PIaILSOSLMICA SLAVE Casc.--The Ann iyivsnian geoids 7ar. Commissioner Longotreth for:lnt/log listened to his conscience in libera ting the tillegel fugitive, 'Daniel. It IS alarmed for the consequences. It Bays: • "The northern section of the Union, mot es pecially Pennsylvania, is destined to become an and our City of Brotherly Love is to I;4o3eheart of it. We could hardly sub , aintllithent our manufacturing industry, but . what industrial state can prosper' without ex - tended markets:or its tutumfactures! And on we ttokindeed, blessed by our union with a large sintimber Of States, the Southern States, whose des tiny, from climate, S:c., it is to remain for tti•- r(es tocome, agricultural and consuming custn users of this State ? We are not the solitary ones of whom South ern men can buy. This should never bo for gotten." . . In other words, we ought to give up these niggers, when they are claimed, without being too nice about the evidence, °seise we may - drive awl oursouthorn customers. It is lobo hoped that the mercenary spirit herein evinced will mellily thicSorith and lead her-to judge lenient ly of steommissioncr, who basing a heart in his bosom, Itas evidently mistaken his occupation. The Philadelphia New_ lakes a More manly new. "The idea that any man—let him be black or white—shall be arrested under a false elute4e, as wag dentin this ease, and then carried lOU miles from his home and acquaintances to meet ono of an entirely different nature, is simply a Species of despotism thatoughtnot lobo allowed. If the mauls a slave, he should go back to his owner. If be is not, or indeed whether he be so or otherwise. be is entitled to have the opportu nity to prove his owu position. It is nut sur prieing, however, that Loco Focoism should act according to the developments of this case. Its proper name is despotism and its practices are such always as are dictated by the genius of tyranny." The North American has an article deprecat ing the hnroh featured of the Fugitive Law. It argues that the summary process it authorizes is MOLD provoke sympathy for the accused, and that the 'violence which it uses is met with equal violence among those whose human sym pathies ,naturally turn to the fugitive. This is undoubtedly true. The South made a great mistake In enacting such a law. It is practic ally a nullity, because every attempt to enforce it stirs up the community in which the attempt to mode to a kind of resistance which, although short of open violence, is too strong to be over come. - - • The N. Y. Times takes a similar practical view. "If the South be not impervious to the dic tates of common sense and common prudence, it will take some means or other after its fashion —whether by committees of the citizens, or commercial conventions, it matters not—to pre vent slaveholders coming North after fugitive slaves, and creating, each a rumpus as is now agitating Philadelphia apropos of "Daniel." It would be hard to conceive of a worse mode either of protecting their rights or their "prop - ertyt" than these attempts to enforce the Frigi ' tive Slave Law. Whether that law be constitu tional or unconstitutional, moral or immoral, does not affect the question. The object for which it was passed is of sorely more impor tance to the South than-the law itself. They want above all things to secure themselves against Wetly the escape of their negroes, and as long as this can ho attained, we presume few of the planters care a straw whether the law is ever enforced or not. Now, every time a slave cacher comes North and seizes a fugitive slave . under the *set, ho intensifies the Anti-Slavery feeling of everybody near the scene of the cap , tnre—he makes converts t.y the hundreds to the ranks of the Abolitionists, and works thousands up tothe_determination that no such thing AO ever occur again in their neighborhood. More over,, theeproar to which the affair gives rise is - heard far and wile through the Slave States, and furnishes the strongest sort of incentive for 'flight to any negro who has either the desire or the ability to runaway from his master. Nothing enntrucourge nn intending fugitive more than the knowledge that sympathy and succor await him at the met of his journey ; find in no way can this knowledge be conveyed to him NO surely ne by the riot, tumult and hem debates which 'occur iu ail the Free States whenever an attempt is made to capture a runaway, so that every slave re-caught and re-conveyed into captivity not only renders the law mere difficult of eaecu• ticn in the future, but iocreases the temptation of other Slaves. to bolt.' That this is true it evidenced by a paragraph • which we Conlin the Brooklyn Star of the Same date, Referring to the election in that city, in ' which the Republicans polled a large inereased vote it adds v.U~. -~~; :-~<~. "The Itepubhcan cause is thee advancing . . and drd4.a single fugitive eave to run arnuil; our oily at election time, we could beat the adversary out and out." ZOOLOGICAL Moser in CATIIIIIIIIIIIL — Some lime ago Professor Agassiz proposed to depoeit his large collection of zoological specimens in museum for the use of the public, provided such an institution should be established No offer more truly munificent could proceed from any scientific man, and it has been met with prompt liberality by the people and Legislature of Muse achnsetts. On Saturday a bill wax introduced in the Senate at Boston to incorporate a Board of Trustees of the Museum of Comparative Zool ogy. The act authorizes Bald trustees to hold real and pessonal property not exceeding $300,- 000. Mr. Wm. Gray, one of their number, has already contributed $OO,OOO, aud the State is to appropriate the proceeds of lands in the vicinity of Boston, contingent upon the subscription by individuals of a certain amount in aid of thein etitntion. With characteristic generosity, Professor Agas eiz proposes to receive into his laboratory in the contemplated AI use= building, when completed, any teacher connected with the Public Schools of the State desirous of fitting himself to teach Natural II btory, and to give him such informa tion as he can, free of charge, during as long or as short a period an he may choose, setting no other limit to such admission than the capabili ties of the rooms devoted to tho instruction of pupils The Boston journals are emphatic in their ap plause of Professor Agassiz, and well they may be. The Old World has madr no more valuable contribution to the New than that distinguished gentleman.
