PERRY MARTIN, Upper SL Lrematugs.—ln the last number issued of the Edinburgh Review, there is en article on the Li brary^of the'lirltish.Museum, which richly re; pays perusal. It gives us ideas in detail of a library on a scale of which we had scarcely a conception before. There are 30,000 volumes of American books alone on its shelves—a larger number than is to be found in any one collection in this country. The British Museum contains, on more than forty miles of shelves, 560,000 volumes! The following, according to the most. reliable palmate, are the numbers of volumes in the greatest librarles-of the world : Bibliotherme Imperiale, ......... 500,000 British Museum • 560,000 Imperial Publics Library, St. Petersburg . 520,000 Royal Library at Berlin 500,000 Munich 400,000 Copenhagen 410,000 Imperial Library at Vienna-. 305,000 Universal Library at (lettingen 300,000 Royal Library at Breslau 350,000 Public Library, Dresden 305,000 The article before alluded to is devoted to a discussion of thi Museum Library. We learn from it that the five hundred and sixty thousand volumes do not include independent pamphlets, tracts, theses, etc. Counting these, this vast collection would contain above a million printed pieces. Among the collection are found 1683 entire copies of the Bible, in different editions and languages, 370 OH 'testaments, 1235 New Testaments, and other parts in proporlion ; the whole number of entries under this heairin the catalogue is a little under 10,000. In German, Hungarian, Russian and Polish it vissesses the best collection of books to be found anywhere beyond the bounds of those countries—a boast, says the Review, which may be extended to the collections in every modern European language. In German, for example, there are 226 entries under the bead of "Schiller," 264 under that of "Goethe," etc. In considering this vast array of books, the labor of making a catalogue of them will at once press itself upon the reader's attention. Let any one picture to himself a library of nearly GOO,- 000 volumes, read daily by some four or five hundred people, some of whom have 200 volumes out at a time, so managed that no volume is ever out of its place the morning after it has been used, that%o reader has to wait more than stew minutes for the books he wants, though such books may not have been removed from their remote, shelyes for half a century before, and he will say at once that here is one of the greatest triumphs of system and of order. A wonderful statement is this—that daring the twenty years' adminietratien of Mr. Pa:dui, the chief libra rian, but two books, and those of trifling value, have been stolen. The catalogue when finished will reach nearly 2000 volumes. From A to.G comprises 572 volumes,- each volume containing between five and elk hundred entries. The work whencompleted will contain one million entries, which will have. oCcupied the entire energies of a large staff of librarians and transcribing clerks (there are at present 20 assislants and 1 trim scribers) during six hours a day for-a quarter of a century. Oa the list of assistants employed on this catalogue there are men of the most exten sive acquirements, clergymen eminent for learn ing, fellows and professors of colleges. The Athaucum a few months ago recorded the death of one of them, Mr. Prevost, who is said to have known forty languages. The thoughtful reader will at once perceive that the catalogue itself will make a library of great value. It will constitute the highest authority for the forms of all kinds of names, historically, or in any other way known, that it will be the most reliable reference for the time, and piece of publication of books and an un equalled mass of information as to the author ship of anonymous works. The Museum is intended to contain everything that has ever been written en every , subject, and it approxi mates to that, now. The catalogue will there fore be a test as to tbe 'comparative spaces occu pied In the' world of literature by different authors. Out of 2000 volumes of Catalogue, the titles of works by or about Shakespeare or Luther; occupy three volumes, Aristotle or Cicero, two volumes, etc., eo that the propor tions of universal printed literature directly occupied by those writers areirespeutively about one in heien hundred, and one in a thousand. Thus in the Catalogue alone, aut almost unex plored field of investigatiotrisopened7- FRAUDS in BRIMS Comm.—lt will be IN membered that the locefecos of Berke, last Oa tober, tried to throw out the vote of the south west ward of Heading, on the ground of infor mality and fraud, by which they hoped to elect Jones. Tiro Onto Riven Boosllllll.—The torrent of rain which fell on Friday and Saturday, has swollen all the streams and raised the river tO within two or three feet of the height reached in the . great freshet of 1,453. At the foot of Broadway, the steamers Jacob Strader sad David Gibson are poking their 1205 CS with un usual familiarity towards the second story of the Spencer House, and at no great distance front that popular hotel, either. Prom Broadway to Ludlow, along what is known' as "Sausage Row," the occupants, have been compelled to vacate their premises without ceremony, the water haring filled the cellars and basements, ioccupied as coffee saloons and small shops. The river telegraph poles along the banks of the river, running in every direction, except to Pittsburgh, have been washed away by the storm, so that communication by that means was interrupted last night. The actual rise in the Ohio at this point, up to last evening, since the storm commenced, can not be less than from thirty to thirty-fire feet The Licking river which enters into the Ohio opposite this city, has overflowed its banks, sod compelled the residents along its margin to va cate the lower stories of their houses and take refuge above. The hanks of the river, for a distance of two or three miles, presented throughout the entire day, yesterday, one of the most animated scenes which has been witnessed in many a year. Thousands upon thousands of men, wome and children were - constantly upon the ban s, or covered the floats sad and wood boats' ale g the ii levee. The streets leading to the river pre ented a continued throng of people on their ay to take a look at the Ohio "on a swell." The ap pearance was more like that of a gala day than a Sabbath, and notwithstanding the wind was strong and piercing, the crowd was not lessened in numbers from morning till night.—Cis. fez. Miss Is. Canto 11113 the successful competitor far the prize of fifty pounds, offered in Great Britain foe, the best poem on Burns, to be read at the centenary :celebration of his birthday, at the Crystal Palace. Nine of the 620 competitors were Americans. The London correspondent of the Philadelphia North American says Miss Craig is a young Seetchwoman, who has occasionally contributed poems to the Edinburg Scotsman, and was sub sequently employed on it. In 1856, Messrs. Blackwood published a volume ocher fugitive pieces, under the title "Poems by Ira." Some poems in the National Magazine, bearing the sig nature C., are by her. At the meeting for the advancement of Social Science, at Liverpool, in October last, Miss Craig was employed in a de partment in which she acquitted herself with great satisfaction. She was not present at the Crystal Palace on the day, not supposing that she should be successful, and was not aware of her success until late in the evening. She is an orphan, and by her own industry-and persever ance has emancipated herself from dependence on a grandmother, in no very affluent circum stances. She has well earned the prize she has gained, It should have been more in amount, ($250), but the honor of beating 42.0 compet itors is something into the bargain. Doubtless, DOW that she has made for herself a name, the frown of fortune will be chased away by the smiles of prosperity. HOILILIBLZ MASSACRE Of A MIffSIONART FAMILy. , —The Rev. Taking up the gavel he looked at it carefully, struck a blow with it on the Speaker's desk, and listened. The echo evidently pleased him, for he struck two or three morn blows, then commenced a regular war dance, keeping time to his step with the new 'war club.' The members cheered, and for ten minutes the old fellow kept up his aboriginal exercise, and only stopped when too tired to keep up his youthful paetirge." IX is A remarkable fact that in the teachinge of Christ there is no elaborate argument, no formal exposition of doctrine, no display of brilliancy, talent, or learning; bat instructive dialogue or parable drawn from some passing incident, simple story, and breathing narrative, pathetic remonstrance, Or touching delineation of future weal or woe. ....Yet he "spite as never man spoke," and his words went, with the power of omnipotence, to the hearts of thole whb listened to hie simple, yet solemn and impressive discourse.
