M. fienego, fruiterer, of Fifth street, near Odd_ Fellows' Ball, •la charged with being at the bottom of a spawns. Used scheme, whereby "exiled patriots" are supplied with papers setting forth the distressed condition of their families in Italy and dectin in painful colors the fact that for opinion's pi sakeg they, the said patriots, have been driven forth to penury and want in a strange land. It ap pears that M. tango is not alone. A certain "noble" Bartholo, probably Um hero of some Neapolitan romance, or the escaped of some aw ful political conspiracy, appears to be the pro prietor of a sort of depot to the 7th Ward, on Enoch street, whence the exiled patriots set out with their pitiful stories to wander over the Wile of Allegheny and - other counties, whence theftglean much money. From these perambulation they all return in due season to count lb funds and rest their limbs at Bartholo's, an set - forth again on their wanderings. - These beggars do not make much about th city. They find it difficult to semen a hearing for their pitiful tales, but about the country, where peoido are not accustomed to the sight of beggars nor ready to look upon a nun who tells so plausible a story, as a cool, deliberate liar, these sponges suck up a good deal of change. The en do rs ed ot perfectly fortified ; they carry pa pers by notaries public, sworn to be fore magistrates, vouched for by the most: re spectable ' seines, all fictitious); they have the name of the ship In which they left Italy, the name of the captain who commanded her, the day on which they left their "dear native land," and the whole. winds up with a.pious wish that "God may bless and reward the benefactors of these unrortunali people." A lie so skillfully told, with so mach particularity and vouched with so good names, might deceive the very elect. Yet all these ;certificates are printed in this country. We have often heard that a large bust. neas was clone in New York In the way of print ind, these affecting papers, brave nowlirst learn that in Pittsburgh there is also a manufactory. The whole fraud thus opportunely brought to light will be put down by Mayor Weaver, most effectually. We trust oar friends and readers .. the country will see to It that the agents of Mears. Sculpt and Barthole get no more money from them. —Since writing the above we learn that three Italians were arrested yesterday afternoon, named Jacobi Costa, Josephis Jeebu, and Mona Verta Jean Baptists, in Enoch street. The Mayor had an Italian interpreter, through whouf they Informed him that if be would let them off this time they would beg no more. Costa had a Paper to the ladies and gentlemen of the United States. 'The paper eels forth that the tinder signed, Mary X COsta, the mother of Jacobi Costa, is an unfortunate woman in a destitute condition. She is a native of Sardinia, but re. cattily arrived in this country. She sold all the property she had there, and came to the United States with four children, all unable to support themselves. When she arrived within 60 miles of New York, the vessel wait wrecked. The name of the vessel was Marl Albert, Captain Kerala. She lost her trunk, with all its contents and but a narrow escape from death. She is without means and cannot get any work. She is utterly ignorant of the English language and "enjoys not good health." Under such circum stances she is forced by necessity to ask aid from the humane. She left her three children ih New York to the care of a family, and will pray God to bless those who give her means in this ne cessity." One of the others had a printed paper some- what similar. Baptiste had on him $46 In gold and the — ithers about $l5 each ill five -cent pieces. The M front ea learned fro ea istelligeni sad re spectable Italian that there is a regular system which has its headquarters in Now. York, by, which this ewindling untried on. There these papers are , printed by the cart load. The chiefs have the whole United States districted off, and solicit Consignments of Italian beggars, to wheat they farm out counties at so much per cent. on the collections made. This county would afford a ground for the operations of about 70, 'When Allegheny is supplied, they then send . their agents to Washington, Beaver, etc. The moneys collected are deposited to the credit of teal de pastier, and then sort on to an Italian banker in New York, whose name we do not know. From there it it taken by the beggar, when he gets as much as be went*, to Italy, where he in vests it to suit himself. The above and other similar foots baviag appeardd, Meyer Weaver thought it beet not to let thati off according to their -request, so be bundled t otia all off to jail for ten clays each, as If there were some - good treadmill lo. put in, they might .ecru the bregd the coptity.wil Juan .to feed. to tbeni.
