The evidence went to show that. old Jerome wee
married to Miss Patterson. of Baltimore by a
priest of the Catholic church; and that the mar

declared the marriage valid,. and the first Em

Here was a direct, contlict between Church and

The captain is a favorite with the army and is
liked by the Emperor, but the latter is supposed
to favor Prince Napoleon frotareasons of State
policy. During the recent visit of Mr. Jerome

Bonaparte, to. Paris, a visit which extended
over a period of six months, they had no inter

his phyeical powers are. Ills weight, his height

and he is a fool If ho does not eari s. :„a reasonable

soma qualities are generally estimated fairly

Not so of his opinion or his own judgment or

A coon came before the Police Court which
!bows that blood will tell, particularly Southern
blood. A man named 0. Sampson was arrested
on a charge of living in a state of open adultery
with a black woman at 42 West Adams street.—
Sampson is a book keeper in a heavy lumber
office, and looks as though he might ho a gentle.
man If he would, and is a Southerner. The wo
man was formerly a slave In Georgia, but was
brought to this city about two years ;since fly
her mistress, with whom ahe now lives, and who
was the prosecuting witnoee in the case. - The
details Of the case are unfit for repetition. Suf
fice it to way that the whole lot appear to have
herded more like swine than human beings. -
An a witness there was also coiled a white
grand daughter of the old lady, a beautiful and!
intelligent looking girl of about fourteen years
of age. To ece her only, ono could not but be
streek with her appearance. But a more igno
rant person it would be hard to find, she could
not read nor write ; she knew nothing about an
oath, had never heard of such a. thing before.—
Of time she had not the faintest idea. She
could not tell whether certain traneactions took
place a week or a year since; she did not know
how old she was ; ehe did not know what year
or mouth It was, nor the day of the month ; she
did not even know the day of the week. Taken
all in all, the whole lot, with the exception of
ilampeon, were genuine specimens of .sam'
billent", of South Carolina, a race but one de
gree removed from the Digger Indians of tho
Rocky Mountains. A more etriking illustration
of the beauties of the "peculiar inelitution" is
seldom seen in this latitude. Sampson was held
for trial in s6oo. —Canoga Dent. Dec. 16th.
USIITOL HINTS TO 100110 Mas.—How many
men ignorantly deny themselves a r'fortune !
There is scarcely a young man of good sense in
this city who cannot save $lOO easily from his
annual earnings, and, If ho will forego cigars,
billiards, and juleps, ho can save double that
amount. Figures sometimes produce almost
incredible results. Thu., 63r : lenience, If a

when he le thirty years old $1,753; when forty
years old, $0,300; when fitly years old; $18,350;
when sixty years old, 48,700: How simple,
then, is the plan by which* youth of the present
day can pane his old age in comfort and luxury.
Ile has only to regulate kin expenses so no to
save one hundred dollars each year from hie in

sum total will ho Increased in the same propor

"1 beg to add a word with regard to Dr.

habitants of the ocean seems to me to furnish
the best direct. proof , that there is an open sea

to breathe. They cannot live without. Now,

must be irresistible."

ROBERT Boris' BOLTHDAT,—WO underetaad
that the Ron. James A. Pearce, 11. 8. Senator,
and the Ron. James L. On, Speaker of the
Rouse of Representatives, have been solicited,
and have accepted the invitation of the Berne
Clab, in this city, to preside at the centennial
celebration of the birthday of Robert Burns, on
the 25th of January next. We believe Mr.
Pearce is a lineal descendant of the .house of
Ramsay, represented by Lords Dalhousie and
Panmmv, two eminent British statesmen. Mr.
Orr is Scotch and Irish in descent, and fully ap
preciates the poetical genii's of Scotland's great
bard.
Sir Archibald Alison, the historian of Europe,
is to preside at asimibbr celebration in Glasgow,
and Lord Macaulay, the historian of England,
will preside in London. The versatile Lord
Brougham does honor to Scotia's peasant:bard,

the first man or woman to whose eye this simple
