Dr. Chandler,
professor of analyticstohemistry In Union Col
lege, writes to (ho TObtlita :
Permit me, witheqt'.expressing any opinion
on the presence orabsencs . of arsenic in the
body of Mrs. Stepheas, to suggest the danger of
deciding on its abnormal presence, when such
very small quantities have been detected. Itfy
suggestion la based on the presence of arsenic,
in small quantities, in a great variety of sub
stances to nature. It was found by Watcher DS
every iron ore ' In theaoil, marl, and in the sed
iments of ten different mineral spring'. Diehl
ding the so well known ones at Elms, Wiesbaden
and Prig:tont. It was, also found in several
other springs by Liebig,.Will, Figuier, Demme's
burg, 1131 ey, Diesel, Fischer, and Keller. The
last named chemist found one-fiftieth of a grain
of arsenic in a !Ingle iug (two quarts of Pandan
water. It has already been detected in twenty
one of the mineral springs of Germany. It has
also been found in twenty-seven of the mineral
springs of France... , In one of these, one-thirti
eth of a.grain was foetid in one gallon of water.
Arsenio has oleo: been detected in mineral
coal ; from two pounds of coal, thirty grains of
arsenic were obtained. .One-sixteenth of a grain
of arsenic was found in two pounds of the rent
due obtained by evaporating sea water. Arsen
io has also been deteeted in charcoal, in pine
wood, in the straw and chaff of rye, in the leaves
of aio cabbage, in the root of the white turnip,
in potato° balls, and In our old linen. Many of '
the medicines now in use contain arsenic as .an
io..purity ; all the andmonial preparations, in
cluding tartar emetic, are liable to be coatami. ,
nat.! by it. As iron is always accompanied by
arsenic, and all Coils contain iron, aemall quan
tity of this substance might find its way into the
body after burial. It In, moreover, a well known
fazt thaLarsenic iadtabitoally used to a surprl-
sing extent by members of both sexes, to improve
the complexion and give the person a robust,
healthy appearance. Finally the great toxin
logical chemist, Orfila, Renounced the discovery
of arsenic in the bones end flesh of healthy won.
and in the bones of healthy horses, oxen and
sheep; and it was only after a prolonged discus
sion with a number of prominent ehemiata that'

he confessed himself deceived in his analyses.

and it was only after repeated solicitations from
her relatives, and when she despaired of his
reformation, that she consented to go to her . fath

On the evening of the 29th of September he
was under the influence of liquor; he was sitting
near the table where his wife was sewing. and
Cantwell was reading. Ills wife asked him to
go to bed, and Cantwell, patting him on the

this position Cantwell stabbed Walker five times
in the abdomen with a pen-knife; then Walker

that 1.1. S. Marshal flifford wrote to the Secreta

Scremrrnc.—The usually grave and discreet
Scientific Astarte= of last weekopene its editorial
page with a notice of the latest new idea for
preventing the sad effects of collisions on rail
roads, which is to have a track laid across the
tops of the cars, with inclined traoks upon long
cow-catchers placed at the front and rear of the
train. The approaching train upon the same track,
moving in whichever direction, instead of porn
' ing in collision, would run up the inclined tracks,
pass safely over the tops of the cars that stood
in the way, and down upon the main track again
in the twinkling of an eye. Neither the invent
or nor Scientifo American informs us That
would be the consequences of a collision be
tween two approaching trains, each having the
"new idea" attached; we are left I. speculate
which would go over, or which would go un
der, or whether they would not both go over,
and under, and through, and every other way.
