Manufacturtra • ---- MANA(MIIIIFF OF PASTOOM--The seeding and manuring of meadows has recently received some notice io our columns. We would now turn to an equally important question, 'one, perhaps needing taller discuesion, viz:. the management of postures. We shall draw some hints from Threes Prinelples of Agriculture, though not confining °tweet( to that or any particular au thority. I. Poultices ehould be entirely. free from stag nant water to ho fitted to the production of good grasses and to prevent injury to the health of cattle and sheep feeding therettn. Oo ewampy ground, drains should not _only be provided but they should be kept in order. flowerer well such land may ho seeded at first, and however valuable the first crop may prove, if the drains become stopped and water remains on the ground late in spring, the cultivated grasses in time give way to coarser herbage; trifler grasses, flags and rushes take their place. This fact has come within the 9beerntion of every far mer. In many cases a few days' work would go far to remedy the evil—on level land a good system of surface draining could be provided and kept open at small expense. On favorable eituatione, underdrains would be far more per maueut and thorough in operation, and hence more economical in the end. 2. Pastures should not be allowed to grow ap to weedy, and yet how few there are which are not irefully disfigureol in appearance and lessen ed in product by these 'Tests of the farm." Thistles, in particular, multiply with great ra pidity in rich pastures, for cattle- will not touch them; consequently the seed ripens and takes root. They not only destroy the grass by taking its place, but prevent cattle Iron. eating it near their thorny leaves. The eyil family remedied. If mown with a scythe a few timed during the flowering season, they will eventually disapear, besides cattle will eat them in a withered state. Most other weeds yield to the came treatment-- all will do so if it is perseveringly applied, and the pasture is at the same time eneouraged, by seeding and manure/In the production of the grosses 3. Occasional attention to spreading the ma nure dropped by the cattle and horses at rent will, in most cases, prove advantateous. If the dung le left undivided, the plants it covers are at first completely stifled; but, the following year, strong, coarse tufts of grass shoot up. which the cattle will not touch, unless compell ed by hunger. If the manure Is spread, on the ~,Lr.,lptrary, the growth of grass is increased, and the dist—..s . isteful flavor is very slightly, if at all injurious. 4. Pastures • ould never b. rowded with a greater_numbar of tie ekeo l lfejlretan proper ly support. Heavy Moe gAtecks vegetation. The planta hove not time te•itrattain any growth; the Cattle bite WY their tape , ooil then tear them op by the ra, - Ite . , The In) 4 us affects of this coarse ire very " the tame and other reasons, cattle must pasture, too early io the pant or Late. G. On the other hand it is equally injurious to a posture to be grazed by too small a number of cattle or other stock. The pasture, if not fully used, will lose in the return it might give; it is also itopoterishlqi by the neglept. The her bage shoots up luxuriantly, and some grasses cattle refuse after they attain full growth: These kinds consequently increase and strength en, while the finer kinds of herbage, closely consumed by stock and crowded by the stronger plant., decrease and disappear. In permanent pastures, louses more frequently result from this cause titan any other. And from those which stand for a few years only, the full benefit ill not derived, unless they are fed off with proper amount of stock in due season, Clover, espec ially, needs some care in this respect. It should attain a fine start in spring before feeding, and then suf f icient stuck should be turned in to con sume the whole product. Then all should be turned into other fields, and a few weeks' rest will give a new, fresh growth to the pasture, which, under • different course of treatment, we have always found to assume a spotted ap pearance, the grass in some parts having reached mature growth, while in others it was closely consumed. We have said nothing of seeding and culture, or of the application of fertilizers: each of these appropriately furnish subjects by them selves, which have and will receive duo atten tion in our columns. The question of changing pastures, and of the kinds of stoak which should graze together or be kept separate, remains for discussion Will correspondents give us their 'Mere and experience on the whole subject of managing pasture lands !—Rural Sew Yorker. On Friday, Mr. A. M. Smith—a gentleman known to Mr. Brace, our Postmaster, and to other parties here and in St. Joseph, as a man whose tetimony can be relied upon—arrived at Elwood, fom iehamo county. A kettle of gold dust was ought by his friend, Mr. Robinson, from Che Creek valued at $6,000 to $7,000. Mr Robin o k n only left Pottawattomie county in May for the gold region. Ile was thirty days only in going there, and has returned in twen ty-eight days—although be had to make a road for himself some portion of the way. • We have given this report in full, because there is no doubt about its authority. _ . We observe by the California newspapers that the Supreme Court of that State unanimously , 00ncur in giving CoL Fremont possession Of the Josephine vein on the blariposa estate. In the Diddle Rogge case, in which Col. Fremont's right to the gold on his lands was questioned,-it is understood that the Supreme Court of Califor nia will eoon give a decision, fully sustaining Col. Fremont's claim as the rightful owner of all the gold on his territory. Thus Col. Fre mont will be entirely victorious in sustaining his exclusive right to undoubtedly the most volu ble property in the world. AT New Britain, Conn., on Wednesday Fred erick Westover, son of Amos Westover, was playing with an old gun barrel, and after touch ing it off the third time with a slow match, ran about twenty feet, when the barrel buret, and a small thin piece, about the weight of a cent, struck him on the aide, over the heart, going through his clothes and just breaking the skin. The heart ceased its pulsations and th boy died in less than ten minutes.
