At the East there are numerous mills where they tear up all sorts of old oast off woolen fabrics I and reduce them by pickets and cards as nearly as possible to the original state of unipun wool. This is called shoddy. The finer qualities are carded, baled and sold to the woolen manufac turers, and. it re-appease in the market in the form of beautiful esesimere and satinets. Other portions of it that is too abort in fibre to spin is sold to fellers, who make it into bat bodies and felt cloth; it Is often made into coats without a seam. We saw a lot of felt coals on Water street the other day without a thread in the cloth or a scam or a stitch in making—felted out of shoddy —which cost the manufacturer about forty cents to produce, and watch could be retailed here at 7b cents each—a warm and serviceable garment for a laboring man. With careful economy nothing need be loot ; the vilest old woolen rag, by the help of art and machinery, is made into most beautiful cloths. OMB mill in Rock Island is said to turn out from three to four tuns of shoddy per week, for which there is a ready sale among the manufacturers.
