Tn« Bosuk Catoouc PaiEßfs Aom.iit Ceii ®ACT-—An extraordinary memorial lias.been ad dressed by 007 Austrian priests to the author of thel Concordot, the Cardinal Prince Archbishop of Vienna. In this document, tho lower Catholic olergy put forth their grievance, in language i the like of which has not heea'hesrd since the I days of the Keformatlon. The memorial begins I -With a rough onslaught on the absolutistidperog atires of the episcopacy. ‘This Concordat, Mt says •has conferred upon the bishops many new privi leges and a large inoreaso of power; bat the pries! has to bear the whole odium of the indignation and of the moral resistance which the hated Con vention has created among the people.” “Then is no doubt," the document continues in a subse quent paragraph, but, that ourrojigionhas be come tbo objeot of universal.derision. The Concordat has [aroused {the wrath of ihe most moderate men with respect to jtho antiquated medirovol ordinances or the Church ; and the ! indignation against the executors of those or dinances becomes louder and more universal from day to day. This sentiment is the more i dangerous as it spreads among the main body of j tho people." The memorial oomplaias of tho wretched pay (sometimes less thau that of a cab j driver) of the lower clergy, in consequence of ! which they are driven to the collection of fees i and taxes which are the source of the most dis - 1 graceful and disgusting the peo . pie. Ileligloo is thus made i<Tappear iu tho light of au iusuffcrablo burden, and agitators increase the ill-fecliug byedirecting attention not to the penury of the lower clergy, butto tho luxury and abundance in which the bfshops j arerevoling. In the next place thojpotitionors 1 lay bare tho laziness of moukbood, and demand i the abolition of those begging orders and tho appropriation of their revenues to the mainten ance of the really working priests. j A more important demand follows. It fo for the abolition of oelibaoy, on the ground that the impoaibility of entering into tho married stato renders tho priest tbo victim of suspicions, of sneering and contempt, und produces laxity': amongst the clergy, thus rendering them con tributors to the moral dissolution which is in vading oven the popular classes. la conclusion tho petitioners demand that "such -reforms should bo introduced asto mako the lower clergy no longer appear in the odious light of oppress ors of the poorer classes;-and that the priests by the abolition of the law of celibopy, should be restored to tho common ties of family and humanity. If this is not dnuo," they assert ‘•all our influence will entirely disapear; the Catholic religion will bo despised, biearchy bo totally overthrown, and the State becomo the foot-ball of oeasless attaoks and complications." They express, too, the significant hope that they may not be driven to expect there safety from the rovolutioary party.—A'. F. Pott. rr.onfcnr£ Fahmb.—To apanjoanoi familiar with the history and statistics of English hus bandry, the surprising productiveness of ihe laoda of that country will appear incredible Nearly nine-tenths of tho cultivated lands in England and Ireland are rented to tenant* who pay usually from four to fire pounds ster ling, abont tweuty-flve dollars por acre annual rent. Where is the farmer io this couolry who could W* uuder each a burden? Here, a form containing from eighty (on hun dred acres, is often rented for ono hnudred and n»y dollars—and sometimes less—and even at this rato the tenant has a hard task! The cul tivation, even where there is a large number of seres in grass will little moro than pay the rent and taxes; but in England, the result is widely different. The tenant who there pays fire pouods sterling per acre, annual rum, and fiuds all appliances, obtains not only the means of a comfortable subjistauce, but wealth, from the prosecution of a calling which here wonid doom him IP want and destitution, and ultimately death, uulc** assisted by tho town. fn ISM, Mirwin climated the produce uf one hiigMah farm of 870 acres at £8.570 or $38,000’ Tho quantify or manure appliedijras 18,7-tC tmo horse cartloads In one year 5 »fi?M0,230 the next: V N'ow admitting the rent of this farm to be but SI - 00 per acre, and the cost of the manure and ite application $12,00 mere, and if to these auma we add, for interest or expenses, taxeß and con,iD s ent expenres of cnUiratiou eto. vl*.oo moro, we shall find, upon striking the balance, that thete will remain a profit of $lO per aero—amounting in the gross negreeate to the sum of $lO,OOO dear gain to the occupant in n single year l Io tba vicinity of London, a bay farm, com prising IGO acres was rented. Tho rental m this ineum, was SUMX) per acae-amounUng mi all to 51.920 per year. A heavy expenditure was required for manure—probably os muob as m *°7 a;se,T England farmer would have been willing to giro for lb* fen simple of the land and yet the tenant succeeded, and has since bc como wealthy, and with no other income than the produce dented from this one Jarm. Id Ireland, a poor tenant had one acre of land erected a manure and farm ing tools, and tho Crst year oleared all expenses -audhada balance of forty dollars loft. And yet that Irish peasant, in addition to (he ex penses and outlays above enumerated, had a church tax to pay, and be at the expense of purchasing bis otto seed and maintaining a family of four besides himself and wife ! Iu this country we cultivate too much land. Were wo to concenrtato our energies upon one quarter of the soil we should derive greater pro fit from oar labor, and instead of exhausting our farms, should keep them in a condition of con sent improvement. Look where we nmy we find that the independent farmers—tho ‘‘good livers'’ of the country, are, in nine oases in ten the occupants of small farms.— Maine Farmer • ’ Shrewd FißAiyieanio Brought ro Light.— Edward 8. Tax Facts in tub Case. —The Colonization Society have published a- statement in reply to the charges of Capt. The statement shows that the President of Liberia did every thing in his power to prevent tho “emigration,” aod that instead of §1604 secured for “passport duty*” as charged, ho did not recolve one cent. Tho Regina'CaeU was suspected of being a regular slaver, and would have been condemned as such but for fear of being involved in trouble with tho French- Government. President Benson pronounces the statement that ho wished Capt. Simon to procure his emigrants in a “palpable falsehood.” He has always been opposed to the system. "'i I The Dasgib or BALLoosnrn.—The result of tbo Adrian balloon ascension, so far as it is known, presents a case well calculated to excite the interest and sympathy of the public. The L» of a m ? n bBiQ S lct loose on a well inflated balloon, without chr or other means for con* . trolling his movements and at the mercy of the . winds, is truly startling. It would be difficult , to imagine a situation more frightful than for a man to be thus suspended thousands of feet above terra firms, with all new of the eartheut off by intervening clouds, without- compass on other moans of ascertaining his position or coarse. Hope for the final safety of each a | voyager, must he small indeed. In connection with this sad event, the cir cumstances connected with another balloon be longing to Mr., Bannister, may bo ofdnterest. Some four years sinoe, without any particular knowledge of feronnutios, he constructed alarire balloon at Adrian, with which, after several in effectual attempts, he finally made a grand as cension; so perfect indeed was it that be froze hts feot very badly on his voyage and was orip " pled thereby for a long time. Somewhat satisfied with his own experience, he hired bis Balloon to Timothy Winchester, at Milan, Erie county, who made a very successful voyage from that place, in July, 1865, and land ed near Hudson, 0., after, traveling, in different directions, some 125 mileij. He ascended till the rarity of tho atmosphere was such, that he be came insensible, and remained so until his Bol loon had descended to an aUUudo admitting of respiration. Bags of web sand,- used for ballast, were frozen solid. Iu August, at the same year, Mr. Winchester made “nether, and his last ascension, from Nor walk, 0. His Balloon waa well-filled, and he went off m good spirits, amid the cheors of a large concourse of people, since t ehieh time he hae not been heard from. When last seen, he was near and going in the direction of Lake Erio ho tidings haro ever been received of him or lua Balloon. Since that time, Mr. Bannister lias done noth* mg in aeronautics, until, in oompaDy with Mr. Thurston, ho constructed his second Balloon which, like the first, has been tho bearer of d human being, as ilis feared, beyond the know ledge of his friends. An experience so fatal and so sad, seldom attends an Individual enterprise, and may well lead him to hesitate before he en gages again io suoh a perilous undertaking.— Toledo Blade. litTEBESTiNo FROM Kansas. —Annl of the Murderer of Buffum. —We have, says the Boston Traveler , a letter from our regular Kansas cor respondent, dated at Sumner, Sept. 11. The only strictly news items is tho following: “One of the most desperate border ruffian murderers of 185 G is now under arrest. The notorious Charley Ilays, who murdered a cripple named Buffum, on the road between Leoompton and Lawrence, because Buffum mildly remon strated against having his horses stolen by the villain, was, as your readers may remember, ar rested by order of Gov. Geary, who arrived at the soeno of the murder, In season to hear the sad-story of the dying man. Judge Lecomnte immediately liberated Hays on straw bail. Geary had him again arreeted, deeming it public outrage that the perpetrator of so heinous a crime should bo at liberty, but Lecompte liber ated him the second time on a writof habeas corpus and he fled the country. Uo has absented him self until very recently, when ho returned, and commuted a desperate assault upon a man living near Sumner. Us was Immediately arrested, and to-day has been undergoing an examination before Justice Johnson, of the place. The ex amination was adjourned this evening until next Friday, and Hays was held in five thousand dollars bail for appearance ot that time. He will probably now bo arrested and tried for the atrocious murder of which he is guilty.” A Fobicse.—Bj the death of Mr. Hobron, of. Calcutta, a yooih now in the employ of a pnoter at the Westend is suddenly put in pos session of moro .than $7,500,000.
