DA VID J). BRUCE'S RECORD.
The President of the Into Anti-Railroad County
,Contention was David D. Beugb, Esq. David,
on taking the chair, noefe a speech. Ho had
been a Whig, had David, but a few years before,
*od,hence be made hU speech intensely demo
cratio; he had also been a Know-Nothing,
double-dyed; and it was this fact, probably, that
Induced him to say that he joined th'e democratic
party because it was opposed to persecuting a
nan on account of his religion or birth-place.
David bad also been a warm friend of railroad
> Subscriptions; and consequently ho took occasion
" (o say that he was unalterably opposed to taxa
• lion for the payment of interest on railroad i
bonds. He is a consistent and patriotic citizen, ‘
Is Brace. I
David presided with great dignity and im- !
partiality at that Convention. He snubbed that •
oltffogy, Wilkins, ruled him out of order on
all points, and kept him from giving much !
trouble; and he put the anti-tax programme
through so handsomely that the Convention,
Cut of sheer gratitude, decided by resolution
that he shoald bo Chairman of the Coanly Com-.
xniUee, with power to trot out the candidates and \
bring them to their milk on the tax-qaestion.
As David, therefore, is to be the ebgioccr of the
- locofoco campaign, and to lead the anti-railroad' ’
forces, we propose to examinehis record on the
railroad question.
Mr. David D. Bruce was elected to the Se- •
lect Counoil of this city, from the Sixth Ward,'
inl&l, and served two years. From the min- |
' utes of the meeting of that body held on the
26th of April, 1852, we extract the following: ,

So the ordinance was read a third time and pass
ed, and sent to C. Cm and action concurred in.”
Observe the deep anxiety of Mr. Bruce to put
the thing through. Mr. Bruce calls a special
meeting of Council; Mr. Bruce makes a Report
from the Select Committee, with an ordinance
authorizing the SUyor to subscribe $250,000 to
the Steubenville road; Mr. Bruce moves the pre
vious question, to cot off debate; Mr. Brace
moves to suspend the rules, and Mr. Bruce puts
* the ordinance through at railroad speed. Con
sidering the depth of his'present hostility to
municipal subscriptions to railroads, we must
confess that he node a fnll hand at the work of
authorizing them.
'Wo pass on to the Tib of May, 1862, when
another railroad subscription was made. Wc
