[From iheLondjn Quarterly RerieiT] T . Tab Pbilosopht or Pain —SirHumytiray Davy, when a boy, with .the defiant constancy of youth which had as yet suffered nothing, held the opinion that pain was no evil. He was refuted' by a crab which bit his toe while bathing, and madehim roar load enonghto be heard n mile off. If he had mautoinpd, instead, that pain was as good bis doctrine would hare been unimpeach able. Unless thewhole constitutlonof the world were altered, oar existence depends on oar sensi bility to saffering. An anecdote, which is re lated by Dr. Carpenter,,in his “principles of Homan Physiology,” from the “Journal of. a Naturalist,” shows the fatal effects of a tempor ary suspension-of this law of nor nature. A drover went to sleep on a winter’s evening upon the platform of a lime-kiln, with one leg resting upon-the stones which had been piled op to burn through the night. that which was gentle warmth when he lay down became a con suming fire before he rose up. His foot was burned off above the ancle, and when, roused in the morning by the man who superintended the lime-kiln, he put his slump, unconscious of bis misfortune, to tbe ground, the extremity crum bled into fragments. Whether he had been lulled into torpor by the carbonio acid driven off from the limestone, or whatever else may have been the eauseof his Insensibility, he felt no pain, and through his exemption from this lot of hu manity, expired iu a fart-night afterwards in Bristol Hospital. Without the warning voice of pain, life would ben series of similar disasters. The crab to the lasting detriment of chemistry,, might have eat en of Sir Humphrey’s foot while he was swim ming, without' hii entertaining the eligheet suspicion of the’ravages that were going on. Had be survived the injuries from the crab, be would yet have-been cut off in te morning of his famous career,if, when experimenting upon the gases, the terrible oppression at bis chest had not warned him to cease inhaling the carbnret ted hydrogen, nor, after a long struggle for life, would he have recovered to say to Ms alarmed assistant,” I do not think I shall dier” Without physical pain, Infancy-would bo maim ed or perished before exeperience conld form it of its dangers. Lord Kaimes advised parents lo cal the fingers of lheiChildren “cunningly” with a knife, that tho little ionocents might as eociate suffering with the glittering blade before Uiey coaid do themselves a worse Injury; but if no amort accompanied the wound, they woald cut np their own fingers with the same glee that ihoy coaid cut a stick, and barn them in a can dle with the came delight that they bam a pteco of paper In the fire. Without pain wc could not proportion our actions to the strength of our frame, or our exertions'to its power of endurance. In the impetuosity of youth we should strike blows that would crush our hands, and break our Afina; .we should take leaps that woald dis locate ocr limbsi longer taught by fa tigue that thc mmftleß needed repose, we Bhould continue our sports anctyur walking tours till we hod worn out the bring tissue with the same unconsciousness that we now wear out oar coals and our shoes- The very nutriment which is the support of life would frequently proro our death. Mirabeau said of a man, who was idle as he was corpulent, that bis only use was to show how far the akin would stretch without bursting.-:Without pain, this limit would be constantly exceeded, and epicures, experiencing no uneasy sensations, would continue their fes tivities until they met with the falo of the frog in the fable, who was ambitious of emulating tho site of the ox. Sir Charles Bell mentions the cose of a patient who had lost the sense of heat iti 'his right hand and who, unconscious that the cover of a pan which had fallen ioto the fire was burning hot, took it out and deliberately returned it to its proper place, to the destruction of the skin of the palm and fingers. This, of itself would be an accident of incessant occurrence if the moni tor were wantiog, which makes ns drop such materials more hastily than we pick them op. Pain is the grand preserver of existence, the sleep less sentinel that watches over our safety, and makes ns both start away from the injury that is present and guard against U oarcfulty in the time to come. > Yellow Jack in New Orleans.—lt would be simply absurd to deny that the yellow fever ex ists in this city in an epidemic form. No good purpose can be aohieved by suppressing or per verting facts. On the contrary, the very effort to throw a veil of concealment around a subject of this kind, increases its terrors by involving it in that, mystery wbioh Is the most powerful stimulenl of fear. For our part, we have en deavered to comply with the duty wbioh we owe to the public both here and abroad, by placing before our readers all the facta in relation to the sanitary condition of the city, that we have been able to obtain. We have kept them advised not only of the weekly interment as reported by the Board of Health, but of the number of deaths daily in the Charity Hospital, and in the city, ever since we have had access to that informa tion. These figures ohow, we think, pretty conclu sively, (hat while the prevalence of epidemio yellow fever is undeniable, we have no good reason to apprehendany each terrible pestilence as dessolatea our city in *63 and *47. We think this Is a reasonable inference from the facts al ready developed. The excitement was intense. -The recruits in their enthusiasm, broke through dis cipline, and biased away at a email herd cross- road in front of them. Bome three or four bulls, ran parallel to a light battery, where the artillerists, commenced peppering them with Colt's revolvers. Stung by these leaden peUoJs, the animals wheeled in line, and charged the battery with the most war-like intentions.— i Down they came with glancing eyes, and I away went the horses aud-piecea in a most Inglorious manner., Oaeplece ran to tho rear and another struck off a quarter of a mile into the prairie, before the affrighted horses became manageable; The dragoons and infantry-of course had a hearty laugh at the vanquished 1 artillery, but had they, been, charged; one-half of the former would probably hate found a seat somewhere else, and the latter scattered rapid ly without standing at all .on the. order of go ng. He thug incurred tho displeasure of his wealthy father, who on learning, of the proposed allianoo at once disinherited the yonng nobleman and tnrned him from his doors. This sudden re vert a exasperated and maddened the lover, and bidding a silent farewell to the homo of his. childhood; and withont informing the object of his affection, he bent his course to this country. On arriving here he joined the Uoited States army, undeserved ten years as a soldier. It is said that his bravery and true heroism on the fields of Mexico won"the admiration of all who had opportunities to observe them. At the expiration of, the ten years’ service, he returned to Germany to ascertain how the estate of his family were managed. He found that his parents were in their graves, and that the property was distributed equally among his brothers and sisters, himself being wholly over looked and disregarded in the wifi. To add to his dark fortunes, he ascertained that the girl who was the innocent cause of his ruin had married and moved away. Von Oertel’s mind had never fully recovered from the shock this intelligence had oreated. Wandering in reason he returned to the United States and came io 8L Lonis. Here ho was prostrated by violent aiokness for some months. When he conva lesced, he found himself entirely destitute of means. His .pride was thoroughly broken down and, fop a livelihood* the Baron actually took to selling “bretxels,” a kind of pastry much 'in favor with the Germans. He this paltry but honest business for sixteen or eigh teen years, and gained the appellation of “Bret xel-Prilz." *s 00 10 od Three years ago,. having saved up the snug snm of $9OO, and haviog met one of the oppo site sex in whom he thought he conld oonflde, and whom he believed wonld make him a good l and faithful wife, though she was several years his junior, Von Oertel waa married. One day, a few montha afterwards, on going home "with his basket, he found that his wife had elop ed with a seducer, and not content with bring ing her husband to disgraoe, had take n his money and everything of any value about the house, leaving him in possession of a basket of bretxels and a dishonored heart. The old man, for he was now fifty-three years of age, quiet ly boro his new grief, and 'Again, with perhaps an imprecation on the false one, addressed him self to tho one great task of his life—forgetting. “Brctzel Fritz” has been well known ln*£t. Louis—a wrinkled, slow paced, stooping old man, with his basket on his arm and rarely a smile on his face. In the lost three years he h&s laid away $4OO, the profits of his little busi ness. Yesterday he was buried, having been sick three or four weeks-. Before he expired he benevolently bequeathed his small possessions to the orphan children of a poor man, well known to many of our cilisens, wno died about a year ago. And so ended the eventful career of Baron Frederick Von Oertel. TheG&assiioppers.— Tho Trenton Slate Ga zelle says:—“Grasshoppers are doing great in jury to tho gross and buokwheat in this county* In some districts the seoond crop of. clover is entirely destroyed’ tho fields looking bare and brown as if a mowing machine had passed over them, cutting tho grass close to the ground. One fanner who had thirty acres of olover, from which he expected a week or two ago to gather a full crop of eoed, informs ns that be will not have a handful—the whole tract having been literally devoured by these pests, which swarm in myriads in every field. Wo have also heard of severul instances where the young buckwheat has been eaten off and destroyed. They com mence at the edge of the field, and eat every thing as they go, and If we do not have a heavy rain or” something else todrivo them off, late pasture will be very scarce, in several town ships.” Tbs Bonham (Texas) Independant tells of a hone which escaped from its owner in May last and was found about seven? weeks after, a mile and a half from the house. He had about twenty feet of ropo tied to his neck when he got away, and Ibis had become fastened to a bush, and kept the horse -all that time. The hone had only twelve feet of the lariat, to play upon. He bad bitten off two elm saplings four inches in diameter and eaten the stumps to the very ground and also the trunk and limbß, as far as bis tether would reach. No rain bad fallen daring the period to wet the ground, and la the , lost four weeks it had not even sprinkled. The ; horse was on “American” horse, of good size, and was fat when he escaped—when found, he was a perfect skeleton. Great caution was ob served in giving him water and food after he was found, and he rapidly recovered his flesh.
