on each bank, about a tuilo and a half from the
upper edge of tho which averages from
half a mile to three-quarters of arnile in width.
Beyond this, aud about four miles aud a half
distant, lay Iho larger ships. On Ihc evening of
(bo 1 preparations wore made for the attack
by the gunboats and ships lying Inside tho bar.
At 7 A.M., Captain Hall, of the Calcutta, pulled
in and desired ’the forts tft snrrender, telling
them if the flagßwere haalod down by b A. M.
the forlswouldbelakenpossossion of peacefully;
if (ho flags were not hauled down, firing would
commence and the forts bo captured by force. Nino
o’clock came, but with no sign of surrender, and
therefore another hour was given them. The
two admirals- were on board the gnnhoat Slany
with tho English and French penoants flying,
(he Cormorant, which was (he leading ship of
the attack, had been lying close up to the forts
on the right bank of the river, and (he people
of tho forts had been observed training their
guns on her.
At 10 A. M , tbo llagof bailie was hoisted by
all the gun boats and steamers along the line,
with (he exception of the Cormorant, which ran
up tho French flag almost at the same moment
running her anchor up to tbo bows, and getting
under way. Ou her deck wero only to be seen
threo solitary individuals—tbe Captain, Sauma
rsr, the master conning tho ship, aodtho steers
mao, the men lying down at their quarters. She
gradually edged over towards the forts on the
right banks, running past them in beautiful style
fired upon as »he passed each fort without re
turnig a gun. During her passage she got hnb
led 10 limes ; but, owing to closing so much on
tbe forts their shot for the most part passed
over her w-ÜboaL doing damage. After pas
sing them she ran over to' the left shore, And
runoing into the mud with her broadside to the
fortHonihatsl.de. commenced.the action. She
was followed by two French'gunhoata and tbe
Nimrod, which latter vessel came to tho assis
tance oPlfer comrade. The different gunboats
£pok up their stations, and as they foil into
Stan opened fire with precision. Afterabout an

ply was quick bnt ineffective the Slaney with
the Admirals on board, rau straight np through
the fleet, towing tho aitackting columns under
Sir F. Nicholson of thePiqae, and the Opossum
towing another party under Captain nail. Tho
French supplied an attacking party for (bo
forts on tbe right bank. Tbe boats pushed off
and tbe men were soon ashore. Then followed
tho usual scene—llie Chinese bolted, and, the
French attack being made very quickly, a mine ,
was sprung, which caused them considerable
loss The forte on the left bank were taken by
the British, without mucbloea. although mines
w«a also exploded bje. tbo

an hour and forty raioule*we‘wtq<Tln possession
of all tho forte at tho mouth of tho river. The
Slaney and Cormorant, with other guultoats
steamed up to attack a large fort mounting "I
guns, situated round tbe bend of the river, while
the Nimrod was left to direct her fire,.at the fort
over tbo split of grouod. In n short tirno Ibis
fell into our hands and in ab?ut two hours and
a half from (be comracnccmebl of the attack,
tho action had ceased by the capture of all- tho
forte.
We ve happy to eny ihe loss on our eido wos
very alight, only one oflicer, tho inaaterof tbc
Opossum, being severely woanJeJ by a shot in
the aide and thigh. Wo have no exact or reliable
particulars of tho loss on tho BrUish Bide, but
do not hear that it exceoda2s killedond wound
ed. Our allies, we are sorry to say, owing lo
ihe explosion ora mine,'suffered more severely;
15 meu, it in said, being killed, and 10 men
wounded ; somo or Jhelattcr dreadfully horned
aud torn by tho explosion. The killed arc four
lieutenants. The Chlncso stuck to Ihelr guns
luanfnliy, and there wero tho usual acts of Helf-
Bacrifico. One hlne-battonoil mandarin waa found
by (bo French.in Iho fort Uiey had captured
dead, besido a gun, having cut his throat, ; and
in the assault on Hre highest fort ofjJl guns, a
mandarin jumped oat and 'charged tho party
single handed. The officers did diltbey could
to prevent him being killed, bat one of the meu
in the flanks, at aomodislance, shot him through
the neck and killed him, to the regret of thoso
near, who admired his bravery. About 'JS guns
were captured, G 8 of which were brass or com
position metal. Somo were eight inch guns,
but wo helievo they bad none of the usual ap
pliancesuof sights. Tho loss of iho Chinese is
supposed to havo been very heavy, as the firing
-was very accurate, theshells bursting with great
precision in theempraznres. Tho Chinese fired
grape and oven attempted shells, but, as their
fuse .was only a piece of common slow match,
the shell generally burst close to the gun.
Next day tho 21st, a mandarin went off to
the Russian Ambassador, whe bad been acting
iu conjunction with Mr. Reed, ns a mediator
between theparties. Count Pumtlno went with
him to The French Admiral, but it was some
time heforo they could persuade him to go and
see Sir Michael; eventuallyhe didso.aml asked
for ibreo day's truce. Sir Michael told him he
could not give him an hour's trace, os they had
been given plenty of time*, and that he certainly
at once proceed to Ticn-tsln with all his force.
Tho unfortunate mandarin went away cobsidcr<
ably crest fallen. Wo nnderstand tbs Admiral
intends to do much tho same as at Canton, se
curing the river at different points by anchoring
a steamer. The river to Tien-toin is of sufficient
depth for tho largest ships orer the bar, 'bat
abovo Tien-tain to Pekin, a distance of 80 miles,
the water ia said to be very shallow, boats draw
ing more than five feet not being able-to ascend.
It is said that it was Lord Elgin's intention to
pnsb on at once to Pekin r and only in ihat'rity
negotiate, for Ihceffectivecarrying out of which
ideahehad sent down for reinforcements. Where
they aro to come from Is by no meatfs clear
looking to the safely of the the
Canton garrison. Her^Majesty’e£stli are under
orders, and perhaps the 77th Bengal Native In
fantry,or the other hAlivaxtft'pfl here

mer may produce- of sidkneas in the Canton
garrison, and a-few. of-the foreign inhabitants
here will doubt that although we get everything
wo desiro at Pekin, we; have still a good deal of
flghUng to do at Canton, and its neighborhood.
At present we “not to put 100 fine a point
on it," besieged in Canton, and beyond our
lines do not bold a foot of ground ; so mooli so
that even Hoqiii is not included in tho lines
and tho people who live there do so at their own
risk, In the hope chat the Chinese owners of
the properties rentedby./ortlgners will give the

The Egyptian rags had been

Steam on tub Eiuf. Canal.-- The successful
introduction of etcam as a motive power on the
Erie Canal is an event second in importance
only to the original completion of that avenue
of commerce. One . steam canal boat has made
atrip through the entire length of the canal.
The canal propoller Steinberg has been making
a triumphal trip from Buffallo to Rochester and
hack. Great rejoicing were had at both ends of
the route and along the line. Gov. King, the
Connl Commissioners, representatives of the
press, and a number of other gentlemen were
of the excursionist s, and the feasibility of the
navigation of the canal by steam is clearly es
tablished. The only drawbaok now seems to be
the bridges, which are too low to permit the
passage of boat pipes without great delay and
inconvenience. That ofconrso-can be remedied,
and should be.
The Steinberg made miles an
£ hottr, creating only a swell not exceeding three
inches in height, and less in fact than used to
be created by the fast packets. Commissioner
Ruggles stated that steam would reduce freight
from Buffalo t o New York fifty percent.
