Canal.-- The successful introduction of etcam as a motive power on the Erie Canal is an event second in importance only to the original completion of that avenue of commerce. One . steam canal boat has made atrip through the entire length of the canal. The canal propoller Steinberg has been making a triumphal trip from Buffallo to Rochester and hack. Great rejoicing were had at both ends of the route and along the line. Gov. King, the Connl Commissioners, representatives of the press, and a number of other gentlemen were of the excursionist s, and the feasibility of the navigation of the canal by steam is clearly es tablished. The only drawbaok now seems to be the bridges, which are too low to permit the passage of boat pipes without great delay and inconvenience. That ofconrso-can be remedied, and should be. The Steinberg made miles an £ hottr, creating only a swell not exceeding three inches in height, and less in fact than used to be created by the fast packets. Commissioner Ruggles stated that steam would reduce freight from Buffalo t o New York fifty percent. » The Gbai'k Or&»’ at tbs "West. —Just as (be grape disease is reported to be passing away in Europe, it eeemu to have become more virulent in tho new lands of onr western .States, which it was thought would be comparatively exempt from its ravages.
